grailkeeper
A lot of the discussion about black library books tend to cover the well known series and authors. I recently read 15 hours and really enjoyed it, despite having heard mixed reviews before.I'm looking for suggestions for books I might have over looked. Any suggestions for books that aren't by ADB, Graham McNeill, Sandy Mitchell or Dan Abnett? Maybe ones where authors with a bad track record produce a diamond in the rough, or one off authors who did great work? bluntblade
Chris Wraight's stock has risen so dramatically that I hesitate to call him underrated, but his work is very strong. I only hear good things about John French, but haven't read any of his books yet. DarkChaplain
Fire Caste by Peter Fehervari. Get it. He gets good ratings, but he's still very underappreciated because of only having two novels out so far, plus a bunch of short stories. grailkeeper
Chris Wraight's stock has risen so dramatically that I hesitate to call him underrated, but his work is very strong. I only hear good things about John French, but haven't read any of his books yet. I didn;t like hunt for magnus/battle for the fang and thought Scars was ok but not amazing. I am a big fan of John French's short stories and his social media presence but I thought the first Ahriman book wasn't great. Praetorian of Dorn was much better. RobMac
Steve Parker - Rebel Winter, Gunheads and Rynn's World were all solid. I want a Rebel Winter sequel. Son of Carnelian
Ho ho! What fun! Another thread where I can shamelessly plug Fifteen Hours by Mitchel Scanlon! It's the best Guardsman story, bar none. Because it isn't about a bunch of heroes in a pivotal conflict. Just a bunch of schmcks stuck in the muck. Reldn
Steve Parker - Rebel Winter, Gunheads and Rynn's World were all solid. I want a Rebel Winter sequel. Very much this. Rebel Winter was a highly enjoyable read. I would also highly recommend Gordon Rennie's Gothic War duology Execution Hour and Shadow Point. Loesh
People call Nick Kyme garbage but he makes amazing stories sometimes, especially when he's writing Third Legion. I suggest Churigien and Perfection, the former is about Fabius Bile and the latter is a sort of murder mystery. Jim Shady
The Dark Eldar trilogy by Andy Chambers is fantastic. I also enjoyed Guy Haley's Valdeor, nice take on the Eldar and it was a different beat to Gav's eldar. Best book Rob Sander's has written for BL is Atlas Infernal. DarkChaplain
George Mann Haven't read any of his other stuff but really enjoyed Helion Rain. If you want more from him, all his Raven Guard stuff is collected in Legends of the Dark Millennium: Sons of Corax, just recently released in paperback and for about 10 bucks on Amazon. DarkChaplain
Fire Caste, The Crown of Thorns (from the Angels of Death shorts, ties into Fire Caste and introduces the Angels Resplendent/Penitent), The Walker in Fire from Deathwatch: Ignition (features Angels Resplendent, sets some stuff up for other stories), A Sanctuary of Wyrms (ties into Fire Caste and The Walker in Fire), Out Caste (Fire Caste), Fire and Ice (novella), Vanguard, from The Omnissiah's Chosen (short story set after Fire Caste), and most recently Legends of the Dark Millennium: Genestealer Cults and Cast a Hungry Shadow (short story). Fire and Ice, Out Caste and A Sanctuary of Wyrms are all printed in Legends of the Dark Millennium: Shas'o or LotDM: The Tau Empire (which is Shas'o + Phil Kelly's Farsight, in paperback, so better value than the hardback Shas'o). All his stuff is of high quality, and all ties into one another in some way or another. Very dark, with many elements of psychological horror. Mantras
Khârn - Eater of Worlds by Anthony Reynolds. I re read this book whenever I get bored - the gritty raw depiction of the just post heresy World Eaters is fantastic, as is Egil Galerius. Seriously, just read it. HeritorA
Fire Caste by Peter Fehervari. Get it. He gets good ratings, but he's still very underappreciated because of only having two novels out so far, plus a bunch of short stories. Definitely. His every story is awesome - but he is the biggest underrated author in BL stable for no known reasons Steve Parker - Rebel Winter, Gunheads and Rynn's World were all solid. I want a Rebel Winter sequel. He is not underrated - he simply busy with his sportlife and haven't written anything for a long time now.
