Taking pictures.

I reckon I'm better at taking pictures of my minis than painting them. If you have a tripod and camera that you can manually set the settings for it'll really help.

 

With black, you want to expose the image bright enough that all the detail in the armour doesn't turn to black mush. A slow exposure helps keep the image clean; my exposure time is about four seconds.

Camera settings wise (if you can):

set the ISO low: about 100

set the aperture to quite closed: about f/11

vary the exposure time to get the right level of brightness

 

After taking the pic, if you can get it into an image editing software and play with the exposure/highlights/shadows sliders, you'll be able to get more out of the image than just assuming the camera gave you the best settings. Gimp should be good for that, and you can get Adobe's Photoshop or Lightroom inexpensively for tablets if you've got one.
