Changing decal colors?

Recommended Posts

I was looking in the "ye old decal" section and found some Imperial Eagles that I would really like to use. The problem is that they come in  black and I'm after a silver or possibly a med grey. Does anyone know if/how these could be edited to get the colors I want? I'm not terribly computer literate so simpler is better! Thanks!

Silver is going to be tricky as home printers don't do metallic paints. Grey on the other hand would be a very easy change to make using image editing software.

I use Photoshop which is expensive, but Gimp is free and will do it, too: https://www.gimp.org. You just use a levels or curves adjustment to drag the blacks up until they become whatever shade of grey suits you.

If you're really stuck I can help you out, or you can ask in Ye Olde Decal thread.

You can use photoshop free trial t9 do this one task.

If these are Carlson's decals, you could always try sending him a PM - I'm sure he could just recolour and re-upload them for you?

Imperial Eagles aren't mine, but Celestial Dragon King's.

And as others have said, getting them in silver will be difficult. The only available 'cheap' printer that has metallic ink/toner is no longer supported by the manufacturer, though there are a few print houses that have them (see the Custom Decal Companies section of +++The Forges of Mars+++ thread).

If you're wanting to do them at home, you have two options. The first (easiest) is to simulate silver as white with blue/grey gradients; basically printing non metallic metal. The problem here is you won't have the shifting metallic sheen. (Decent quick Photoshop tutorial here.)

Option two is make the logo portion clear and the surrounding area your background color. Or, is other words, you're printing the background, not the logo. You paint the surface the decal is going on silver, then when you apply the decal, the area of the logo will be silver while the surrounding areas will be your background color. BKZer0 has a tutorial that'll give you an idea of the technique.
