The Wolf King

Started on my Russ, after waiting for what seemed an eternity, he finally arrived. Upside of the wait was lots of planning on how to subtly change him. I really like the model, but for me Russ always has absurd amounts of hair, and thick Logan side burns. It's just how i visualise him now after seeing the Blanche artwork. The new mini is great but felt he started to border on the looks of the longer haired primarchs, no less the Lion. He will also be a red head, not convinced by the blonde.  The other subtle change is the axe, the sculptor did such an impressive job of sculpting the symbol of Morkai on the head of the axe that i couldn't bear not have it as a prominent feature after I paint it.

Now I have an impatient wait for Freki and Geri, and all of the Space Wolf goodness to be released.

Thanks for the kind comments guys, very chuffed with how the chops turned out too.

Here's some WIP pics of the painting, if it's anything like my Angron, it will take me weeks to finalise, Im a slow painter and like adding lots of little layers, hair is now counting 7 very thin layers, and counting, need some more high lights to reveal some of the strands and locks.

Hope to get the armour weapons and pelts this weekend, then I'll need a week or so of courage to paint the face, so daunting painting a primarchs face.

Thanks Deathspectresgt7

Quite fun painting this primarch, was worried as I haven't painted space wolves or grey armour before. Still have some highlights to add and then I'll move onto the metalics properly. Once again daunted, this time by the bolts on the shins and shoulder pads.

Axe is fine, sword isn't as weak as I thought is was going to be, but it is still a delicate piece of the miniature. I don't know the exact reason behind it, I don't know if tempering applies to resin or not. But usually I've applied some heat with water to weak resin, mostly to bend into shape, once done I quickly submerge it much colder water. This seems to help the durability and makes it noticeably stiffer . I don't know why...

Decided to work on the skin rather than the pelts this weekend. I need a touch of refinement on the eyes but I'm quite happy with the outcome, snarling and somewhat bestial.

And... Complete, been working a few hours solid, so the base will happen much further down line this week, thinking of giving it a zhandri dust light spray and then build it up to the whites, golds and blacks of Prospero. Still also tempted to add some verdigris like forgeworld model. And I'm yet to attach the Bolter...and a Tankard.

Excellent work. I'm surprised you sculpted a samurai's topknot onto Leman Russ, though. You must really like Wolverine, who, though not a samurai- as he's not a native Japanese, he doesn't hold the noble title a true samurai has- received the same training, and has the same skills, as many samurai.

Will you add claws to the model's gauntlets?

Thanks Bjorn, I didn't base the topknot on a samurai, or Wolverine. Was rather working from most representatons of Russ where a large swathe of his hair is kept up, as seen in Blanches and the Heresy Novel covers. But that wolverine info is a very interesting bit I didn't know, though I guess Im more of a film fan than comic fan.

I've worked further onto Russ, more layers, especially on the armour which was looking much more 40k than 30k so I've toned it all down with a few layers of Nuln oil and the odd touch of mechanicus grey. Pics to come but I'm going to wait for my partner to lend me her camera as I can;t seem to get a quality shot with the tablet that isn't grainy.
