The Pacification of Ophelia VII

Does anyone have any information on this event during the Great Crusade other than the terse description;

During the Great Crusade Ophelia VII was the site of a battle for the Imperium's forces; where the Emperor himself, led the charge with one hundred Custodians and ten thousand Legiones Astartes of the Imperial Fists Legion.

?

The reference for that is The Horus Heresy Book Three - Extermination, pg. 61. I do not own the book, and don't particularly want to buy it just on the off-chance it contains more information.

I am writing a bit of fluff for my own army, and would like to be able to tie my fluff into this event (if any details exist). Details such as, who were they fighting? What required the Emperor personally, 100 Custodes and ten Chapters of Marines? This was a Great Crusade battle, so it was not against traitor Marines - Xenos of some kind?

If anyone has any information, I would be grateful. I suspect, however, there IS no information beyond that single, throw-away description. At which point, I shall just make up whatever I wish for my fluff :)

The sentence right after says this:

Again at Askania, the Emperor called on not only Horus and the Luna Wolves, but Dorn and the Imperial Fists to form his vanguard in breaking the Shrouded Dynasties.

Since they used the word "again", one could assume that it's the same foe on both occasions (so the Shrouded Dynasties).

Thank you! "Again" could also mean the Emperor is using Dorn & the Fists (put that on the list of band names) once more. i.e. he is using them on Ophelia and again on Askania.

I will go see what I can find out about these Shrouded Dynasty fellows . . . . aaaaaand there's no information about them, either :)

Pure speculation, but since this happened during the first great crusades we can assume it was taken from a now extinct xenos faction.

The "real" history of Ophelia 7 (sometimes called Ophelia 4) didn't really start as far as the empire is concerned until the Ministorium moved in. At that time it was the third richest planet in the Empire.  Terra and Mars being 1 and 2.

-- a side bit of trivia, Hamlet Act IV Scene vii is where we learn that Opheilia drown herself. -- [ETA] given the second part of your forum name I guess you already knew that ;)

Anyway ..... we know the Emperor and a massive army took Ophelia 7 by force.  The destruction would have been tremendous.  By the time the Ministorum was preaching Imperial godhood, Ophelia 7 was the third largest economic force in the empire despite it's distance from Sol.  I would guess it was someone's home world before the Emperor "liberated" it.

I am not a fluff expert by any means but I have pondered the question of what makes Ophelia 4 (now 7) unique enough to be the only other priory next to Terra several times over the years (looks up copy right info .. OMG it is coming up on 20 years?! --- I'm getting too old qq  ) .  There are not many references to our world until later in it's history.

Well, a friend of mine had the book - and I have read the whole section on the Imperial Fist and there is nothing there beyond the simple sentence :)

I am leaning towards a xenos world; I think I will leave the actual details vague.

Yes, I am familiar with "Hamlet" :) The forum name is the name of my Inquisitor; Danforth Laertes of the Ordo Hereticus. He is an orphan of Ophelia, taken onto the Black Ships when his psychic powers manifested and swept into the Inquisitorial training programs. He didn't have a surname (no known family) but as a "brother of Ophelia" he is given the name "Laertes" as a nod to ancient tradition no-one understands . . . :)

I am thinking the wealth of Ophelia came from the fact it was a pilgrim-destination, with vast donations, tithes and so forth pouring in. It might have been that the Ophelia system itself was very resource-rich and so brought in wealth.

I hate to it but wasn't Ophelia Attacked by underground Necrons at one point? I only bring this up because IIRC 'a shrouded dynasty' was one of the ways the necrons in Orpheus were referred to.

It sounded "Necrony" to me, too :) But, the dates would be off - it would be 11,000 years later that the first encounter with the Necrons would happen (which was with Sisters of Battle). Weren't they all in the Long Sleep at that time?

But Ophelia having "underground Necrons" would be sort of awesome for my intended background . . . although I think you might be confusing it with the Sanctuary 101 incident http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Sanctuary_101

The fact there is no clear, definite history for the Pacification of Ophelia VII makes my job either easier .... or harder! But I think I have some ideas. Rather than clutter up this thread (whose purpose has been fulfilled in revealing there is, in fact, no official information beyond "THE EMPEROR AND 100 CUSTODIANS AND TEN THOUSAND MARINES WENT TO WAR!") I shall continue this discussion of fluff and background at this thread I created to show off my fluff-so-far here http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/328236-the-order-of-our-crystal-lady/
