Finally finished MoM

Absolutely loved the story, the variety of characters, the setting. Seriously one of the best HH I have read for a long time. Well done ADB! (Spoilers beware!)

Some thoughts I had

the famous sword name was unexpected but made me believe being killed by it was a possible future the E had seen

The strange Blood Angel that kept smiling all the time was creepy :)

The Custodian being told that smiling was not a good way to pretend to be Human (or something like that)

The Primarchs being referred to by numbers was interesting

The E in a hazmat suit. I had an image of Him in my mind as having a steamed up visor not being able to see anything "hello ... anyone there?" hehe

The amazing bond between Custodian and Emperor was a brilliant take on things.

The vision on the Emperor as a child killing his uncle with his psychic powers for killing his dad. This clinched the deal for me that he is "just" an incredible supernova powered psychic perpetual ... although it's all just a vision and could be made up to prove that nothing has to be the way it seems.

The webway being sealed for me is a good thing proving that the throne really is just primarily for life support and not doing a hodor "hold-the-door" on the webway

Poor Custodian at the end. I really had some feelings of sadness for this guy. He was so confused and sad but his loyalty came through.

The E's injuries didn't seem to bother him for very long. He must be rather powerful!

Im still making my way through it. But I too loved the scene with Him growing up in Asia Minor. When the custodian asks, " Did you grow up here?" The Emperor doesn't reply in denial or confirmation. I heard a silent "A part of me did." in that scene.

I've nothing against them smiling. He just did it a lot whilst talking to mortals. Perhaps this was ADBs take on making the BA seem more "caring" like their Primarch is.

Not a spoiler as such. Just an impression I got whilst reading.

He is more human. A D-B made amazing job here showing how distant Custodians are comparing to SM. We always saw how different SM are to simple humans, but now we had a clear view of Custodes being totally unhuman.

And probably that's the best depiction Custodians ever could have - cause they 'made' this way. To be exalted bodyguards of the biggest Transhuman in the universe. To be successful in that you should be totally ubhuman msn-wink.gif

I absolutely loved the way the Custodians were shown to be amazing combat specialists. I got a very Spartans from the 300 movie vibe when the scene was showing a single Custodian fighting in a hololith. Truly spectacular. Especially as they essentially have their own arming droids for lack of a better term. "Catch this and refill it while I use my dual swords"

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

Hmm, would have loved to know the relationship between custodes and thunder warriors. From what I understand, thunder warriors were superior in strength and toughness to astartes, but were less stable, more vicious, and generally more "human". Wonder if they were a match to custodes

I'd actually be curious if custodians look down on astartes like most astartes look down on humans.

We actually directly pointed out that they do exactly that. Custodes think of SM as overspilled guffy treacherous weapons - who does not deserve to be relied on or given Emperors protection

I'd actually be curious if custodians look down on astartes like most astartes look down on humans.

Oh they don't trust them. Plus the battle scene shows them cutting through Astartes like Astartes cut through Humans. Which in my mind is how it should be as they are genetically mini Primarchs. They looks down on Astartes because they have extra organs to make them better. Custodians are genetically rewritten as far as I can tell. No implants. Just volunteers (forced or otherwise).

Forced volunteers :)

I imagine that the sisters are directly under E-monies command, with their commander having the same level of interaction with him as the custodes commander

Pretty much. Different responsibilities and tasks though obviously.

Strange how then being pariah never seems to bother The Emperor though. Wonder why that is.

So are Custodes to SM as SM are to Guardsmen?

What y'all think?

Zephon’s pale eyes narrowed, his concentration absolute, taking in the ballet of violence unfolding before him. He had seen the warriors of the Ten Thousand fight before, albeit only in grainy pict footage. He had heard the countless unpoetic comparisons describing their uniqueness as the perfect exemplar of a process that became diluted and rushed to mass-produce the Legiones Astartes. Yet he had never seen them in battle against Space Marines. This warrior reaved through them – reaved through Zephon’s cousins from the rebellious Legions – cutting them down, butchering them the way Zephon himself had massacred his way across human and alien battlefields.

How easy, all of a sudden, to see how Constantin Valdor, the Captain-General of the Custodian Guard, was considered an equal of the primarchs themselves in matters of blade-work, when any Custodian could be as skilled as this.

The context is that

it's from Zeph's limited perspective and the Custodian in action is Ra, an elite tribune perhaps not far below Valdor himself...but still really impressive no?
