My Ulrik

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

At Graymane's insistence, I am posting my Ulrik. He said you would appreciate him.

I started painting earlier this year and have grown to love it. Ulrik is my 6th model to date and I am pleased to say placed 2nd in the local GW painting competition.

So here he is:

Please let me know what you think! smile.png

Foto is not as sharp, so hard to make out some details (or maybe that's be going blind). Having said that, the paint looks natural and nothing really jumps out as being out of place, so kudos on that. However, the thing that I like most is the placement of the snow. Really well done on that part.

Very impressive, and welcome! Please pop a copy of the picture in The Wolf Priests Thread, in our Resources thread (pinned to the top of the subforum).

Hey guys,

Thank you so much for your lovely comments! I was really nervous about posting on here as I am a little hard on my self however Graymane insisted and I am very pleased that I finally did.

Basically with the snow i used a titanium white powder pigment and snow flock (I will post pics and steps if wanted by you guys) I used pva on the base mixed with a dab of white paint into a paste and painted that on the base in the nooks and crannies and packed it in around the feet. I let that dry and then came back with the titanium white powder pigment. Now with this stuff it was more of me winging it and seeing how it looked to be honest. As I say to Graymane i have no idea what i'm doing half the time lol (he gets rather vexed hehe) Anyways with the power i first made sure i was happy with the thick snow/pva mix on the base and then matt varnished the model having a loaded brush of the dry power in hand. As soon as the model had a light coat of varnish i got put the model down on some paper and began tapping the loaded brush about a couple of inches max above him almost as if it was snowing on him. wherever the dust landed it stuck (make sure you work quickly) after dusting him with snow from above i then used the same dusted up brush directly on him lightly flicking the brush over his hands, head etc. However i did layer up a good amount of the dust directly on the tops of his feet and around them. once happy flicking dust i then used another very very fine mist of matt varnish from a distance to seal it in however. when picked up it does transfer a little onto hands (i may have to coat him again)

But yeah sorry it is a little vague for now as i'm posting from my phone I will knock up a dummy model tomorrow and take pics of what i'm using as show you how each step looks (hopefully it will make some sense then lol)

Thanks again!!!! :) xxxx

"As Ulrik gazed down from the headland onto the packs of Fenrysian warriors battling over the newly formed spit of land, a light powdering of snow presaged the coming storm that would drive them all to shelter."

Popped into my head when I saw your Ulrik Freya.  Amazing work.
