Scratch built Land Raider Spartan

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I figured that it is about time to share my latest project with a larger audience, as the progress that I've made so far is... well, is simply there. Some time ago, I decided to build two Land Raiders from scratch (using plasticard, greenstuff and spare bits only), as I figured that it should take too much time and the extent of alterations I'm planning to make is large enough to justify not buying a kit.

The first Land Raider I want to build is a Command Phobos/Spartan variant (with detachable Lascannons). The tank is going to be a blend of a regular GW Land Raider and a FW Spartan (but the proportions of the blend are as of yet not determined), with the addition of some original or inspired-by ideas. The tank is to serve as a command vehicle for my Black Templars. If you by any chance are interested in more progress pictures, please refer to my crusade thread in the BT subforum.

From now on, I'll be posting progress photos both here and there (though, I'm planning to post only major updates here).

I've left the large flat area of extra armour at the front for some fancy painting or a collection of crusader badges commemorating the tank's participation in various campaigns.

Thanks for visiting! Any questions and comments are most welcome.

They do seem smaller, right? I haven't thought it over yet: I just figured that skulls will be fitting for 40K, that's all. They are copies of the skulls in the steps of the Librarian Witch from the Space Hulk game.

I'm not using any software (which at times seems to be overly time-consuming, as at the same time I still don't have a clear idea where I want to go and end up with the project). I'm figuring most of the detail as I go and for the basic structure (shape of the track sections and main hull), I'm using some papercraft templates I found online.

Here's for an update of the progress. Over the last month, I managed to do most of the detail of the top part of the main hull:

And a close-up on the pulpit:

From a fluff perspective, the book is replaceable with w heavy weapon. So, when there is no shouting marine in the hatch, a more useful member of the tank's crew can mount a multi-melta and use the ornate shield as additional cover from enemy fire. But, as this is 40K and shouting and religion are a big, war-winning thing, I decided to use my extra copy of the old biker chaplain.

He hull itself is wider than that of a regular Land Raider. I'm not sure if that was a good idea, as it looks quite clumsy now, but I'm waiting for the final result to pass any judgements. What do you think? Here's a comparison of my Spartan (from an earlier stage of progress) with a regular Land Raider:

I've managed to complete most of the top hull, including the details. Some things still require some green stuff, the banner needs some filing, but it's done for the most part:

I've also made a shrine-loudspeaker, which isn't that great, but as I put some time and effort into making it, will find its place in the final model. However, it most likely will be on the Chaplain's left, on top of the track sections, and not in the middle, like in the images below. The cable stubs will become candles.

Wow that looks intense, great work so far should look great with all the attention to detail you have put in. I love the use of a chaplain in his little shrine very BT.

One question the hatch door behind the chaplain it's one that splits in two rather than opens as one whole piece is it a place holder or something? Just asking as everything else looks great so far.

There is no need to suspend any disbelief - the anti-gravity engines are built into the thing and the skull is there for decorative purposes only!

I should post another update relatively soon: this time with some progress made with the front section of the vehicle. What terrifies me is that it appears that this is going to be my first project that I'll actually complete, in a relatively short time on top of that! With the top hull done, and a hefty amount of progress on the track sections and front hull, there are only two other big things to handle: weapon sponsos and engines, both of which terrify me as they involve a lot of tubes and round stuff, so things I don't have the tools or resources to handle easily. The remaining stuff -- front bolters, tracks, rivets -- hopefully shouldn't take too much time.

On the one hand, I intend to reserve this thread for major updates on the project only and spam my crusade thread with detailed (and sometimes pointless) pictures of anything I manage to assemble and fancy to photograph. On the other hand, I'm so happy with my progress this week that I'd like to share it. So, remaining true to my intention, I'll just leave a link here, just in case anyone's interested in seeing how I'm doing with the front section of the Land Raider. And I'll update this thread as soon as I'm properly done with the front ramp.

I'm happy to report that the ramp section is mostly done:

The ramp opens to show a bit of interior and is mounted using magnets. The interior is not glued yet and the details are on detachable panels for ease of painting.

Now I need to just finish the front heavy bolters. I decided to scratch build them as well because I regrettably found out that I do not have a set of spare ones. This is how they look like at the moment:

It has been a while since the last update. The restard after such a long break unfortunately was not that great. It seems that the break plus the proper manual labour (finishing my flat, assembling furniture, not plastic tanks, etc.) had their toll on my skills and precision. It's taken me two days to get roughly back on track and these two days caused much frustration, as I ruined some parts and needed -- what appeared -- four time more time to finish what I wanted or needed. This was especially infuriating with the additional 'frame' of armour surrounding the hull-mounted heavy bolters and the rather unfortunate episode with the exhaust pipes: I wasted half a day's work by scrapping what I did.

I do not have any tubes with the right diameter for the exhausts, so I thought I could utilise some old ballpoint pens. You'd be surprised how tough the plastic they're made of is!! I had to saw the tube and it took way more time than I thought it would (any attempts at cutting the tubes with a knife ended in injuries or cracked plastic). After some cutting and filing, I finally managed to get the bits to roughly the right size, but quickly ruined the pieces by not drilling the holes in the right places.

With this failure, I figured that the quickest way of making the exhaust would be... green stuff. And I have to say that this didn't end well. For some time I've been curious whether I'd be able to reproduce large 3D pieces using press-moulding. And the answer is now clear: I can't. The result of my endeavours is wasted 'stale' green stuff and time. The only upsides are that I've made sure that press-moulding has its limits and I might have some acceptable bits useful for a base of a dreadnought or something else.

With all that said, it's now time to share some proper progress. And it seems that I finished the front heavy bolters of the mighty Land Raider and most of the front in general:

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k260/krj_38/Land%20Raiders/P1050871_zpsrno4nbsp.jpg

Below is a photo of how I wanted to position the bolters. This isn't particularly well visible, but the guns (magnetised and thus able to pivot) were simply placed in the recess. But that didn't feel right, as there was a large, asymmetrical gap through which too much of the lacklustre interior was visible.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k260/krj_38/Land%20Raiders/P1050872_zpsfxmnyqkm.jpg

I adjusted the housing for the gun by adding a plasticard frame with truncated, instead of perpendicular, corners (as always, there is a mess and there are gaps, but they will be handled afterwards). I also added some kind of aiming device/scope/camera thingy as an auxiliary targeting system (the primary lens being safely mounted between the heavy bolters).

With the front done, now it's time for the rear - the engines, exhausts and... other stuff that is yet undetermined. Thanks for visiting!

I put all of the stuff together and added something more. Here are the completed sponsons for my scratch built Land Raider.

Firstly, a picture of when they looked cool:

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k260/krj_38/Land%20Raiders/P1060023_zpsm9ve6wfh.jpg

And now the final version, ruined with the boxy targetting stuff I put on top. It turned out rather cumbersome, but it stays. I really want to get over with the project and I suppose that after the initial disappointment goes away and I put some paint on it, I won't even remember the trauma I'm experiencing now. I can always claim that this is a design feature: reinforced armour to protect the lenses and electronics, or some other nonsense.

Looks good! What don't you like about the targeter? Was it just a bastard to put together?

I must say it is awesome that you built two sponsons from scratch instead of just buying some.

Thanks a lot for visiting an leaving a comment. Regarding the targeter, I assembled it without having the sponson for reference (which was silly) and it turned out bulkier and boxier than I intended. In other words, I were aiming for a sleeker look, but failed to deliver.

It's great that you say 'awesome' msn-wink.gif I find this a bit silly on my part, to be honest, as producing such detailed bits is extremely time-consuming (and scratchbuilding is time-consuming in itself). My decision to build these bits stemmed from that I intended to make an option for quad lascannons (remnants of the idea are visible in the green stuff tubing) and I didn't have enough barrels to do that. As the project moved on, I rejected the idea of building a Spartan (I probably should change the name of the thread) and settled with a bigger, custom pattern of a Land Raider. And as I didn't have enough Lascannons of the same type, I went the masochistic route and built those. Regarding buying sponsons, there's a problem with that in Poland. I turned out to be not a gamer, but a solitary hobbyist, so I don't have access to any forums or groups where people sell bits. And the bits shops availible to the general public either do not sell Land Raider sponsons, are out of stock or ask astronomical prices for the parts (one set of Lascannons cost roughly half of a new Rhino, which is way to much for me - I prefer to 'waste' two hobby days on doing my own stuff).

Oh, and there is (or should be) the satisfaction.

I am happy to report that the assembly is completed! The entire model is blue-tacked together. I'm not sure about the front ramp, though; I might widen it a bit.
