Fluff reasons for a combined IX + XVIII legion force?

A joint expeditionary force pre-heresy seems the most feasible. The two would work well together and have many complementary skill sets.

Salamanders are craftsmen the Angels are artisans.

Sallies being from a high grav world would see them hold the line while the Angels would take to the skies and assault over them in a twist of the Hammer and Anvil tactic the Sallies favor.

Both like heat based weaponry.

Both primarchs have very noticeable mutations (Onyx skin and wings)

further into the heresy you can always use the explanation that warp storms scattered part of one of legions fleets into the vicinity of the other that's how some blood angels are going to end up with my salamanders anyways

In terms of game-play, this is probably how they will function, with the more resilient Salamanders units holding the line (and thus acting as the anvil), and the Blood Angels deep striking in and acting as the hammer. Fluff-wise, this is probably where I'm leaning at the moment as well. smile.png

EDIT: Xenith, Pyroclast91, Ikka, Black Orange - I like the idea of a semi-shattered force, but I do really want to use Vulkan at the moment, so it doesn't make much sense as he disappeared before the legions started breaking up. If I decided to not use the primarch, I may justify the force with this fluff, though.

if you went that route it would also be the perfect opportunity to build Artellus Numeon and friends and perhaps even a crazy version of Vulkan

Tbh, that would be pretty cool; painting up a smashed-up, bloody version of Vulkan and converting some of the Salamanders characters in the BL books. smile.png

I definitely considered it myself after reading Deathfire the Black Library sure makes it tough to stay on task when your reading through the heresy series I think I've come up with a plan for each of the legions and most of the main characters at some point or another

HH6: Retribution.  It's an absolutely wonderful story about a group of Salamanders trying to journey from Nocturne to Istvaan, in search of information regarding Vulkan.  To say it's better than Deathfire is a gross understatement.

The story's called, "Upon the Anvil of War."

Just to add to that, read P24 in HH: Retribution, it details a Firedrake Legionary who stayed on Baal to join their defence forces - the Blood Angels, with so few of their own Astartes left, basically organised whatever forces they could under the overall command of a BA company. They're called the Baal Auxiliary Defence Force, and are divided up into Provisional Battalions.

The Blood Angels, much reduced in number with the departure of Sanguinius and the bulk of the Legion, were quick to press these ragged stragglers into service against any Traitor assault on Baal. In total the Seneschal of Baal commissioned eight provisional battalions, a force of almost 8,000 Legiones Astartes warriors, for the defence of Baal. The t1' Battalion, of which Legionary Dre'Haan was a member, was typical of these formations, consisting of a mixed company of Salamanders and Iron Hands cataphractii, a line company of Salamanders infantry, a demi-company of Raven Guard reconnaissance units and a single company of Blood Angels assigned as custodians.
