Scratch sculpting Khornate Daemon Prince

Recommended Posts

Looking at the Traitor Legions book, particularly the World Eaters section, It occured to me that I wanted to put the Halberd on a daemon prince who was an ascended berzerker.

I'd picked up about 3 feet of green stuff and a small amount of Apoxie for sculpting various things a few months ago and I started making a wire armature to build from.

My housemate pointed out that I would run out of material unless I built a much thicker armature or used something else to bulk out the shape.

What would you guys recommend I use to get the general bulk before putting on the green/apoxie layer for detail?

Make a wire armature using Florist's wire.

Then scrunch up aluminium cooking foil, and attach this to the armature.

Next, use one of those emergency repair putties from your local DIY/Hardware store that sets like iron in about six minutes, and (working with small quantities) apply a layer over the foil and wire. Take your time and keep the putty smooth - it sets fast, so be smart about what you can mix and apply.

This will give you a very strong and lightweight armature to work over, but be sure that you keep it a bit thinner than you think you'll need (as it's a pig to shave it down later if it's too bulky).

Instead of the emergency repair putty, you can use something like Milliput, but this takes 24 hours to fully cure, and isn't as strong as the repair putty. If yo go down this route, you will need a very solid wire armature to make sure the final model doesn't bend or collapse over time under it's own weight (as even despite the foil packing inside, it'll still be reasonably heavy).

If you are on Twitter, it might be worth Tweeting Andy Foster at Heresy Miniatures - he does a lot of very big model sculpts, and will be able to give you more specific advice. (He's also a very nice guy who loves his work and would be happy to help, I'm sure! ;) )
