Khornate individual
I know it's a discontinued wash, but I have a little less than half a bottle and over half of a army that needs that wash. I have a bottle of the Nuln oil and a few months ago I picked up one of the large bottles of it to make sure I had enough for my army. I got home and saw the large bottle is gloss. I got out an old miniature to try all three bottles and make sure that there was no difference, but.... Badab black gave me what I was looking for. It darkens the color of whatever it's put on with a bit of the ink shine and that's what I want. The bottle of Nuln Oil made the mini a little darker but it looks like it's covered in dust when dry. And then the large bottle of Nuln Oil gloss, turned out to be a waste of money, all it did was sink into all the recessed areas, which is great for making black lines in armor but nothing else. I looked on ebay and didn't see anything so I thought I would post here. So if any one ....+++has advice on either a good replacement or a source of some more BB that would be appreciated+++....and all that good stuff +++Edited by the Inquisition, no trading posts please+++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/328901-in-need-of-badab-black/ Share on other sites
Isolia
Alternatively, if you have a store nearby, maybe you could chat win the staff to try out the new Tints before buying one, in order to darken paints ? They seem to work well with metallic for example because they don't kill the shiny effect too much Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/328901-in-need-of-badab-black/#findComment-4596447 Share on other sites
Major_Gilbear
Army Painter Dark Tone is a good replacement for Badab Black. Experiment results here. Khornate individual
Thanks Major Gilbear, I'll give the dark tone a try. Sorry Brother Stobz, won't happen again. sockwithaticket
I concur with Major Gilbear. AP Dark Tone is the way to go. It more closely resembles Badab than Nuln Oil does and has the benefit of coming in a much better pot, in greater quantity and cheaper (depending on where you are). Brother-Chaplain Kage
Dear Santa: Please let us give GW lots of money by bringing back the old washes we all loved. Thanks, -BCK Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/328901-in-need-of-badab-black/#findComment-4596526 Share on other sites
Khornate individual
Well I put in an order for 2 bottles of the army painter dark tone. People on ebay amaze me, the first listing I saw for this bottle was 2.49 plus a couple dollars for shipping. The next listing right under it the person wanted 16 dollars for one bottle (plus shipping!). When it comes to buying paints I always go for the greater quantity and cheaper route. I been painting miniatures for about 17, 18 years and for 15 of those years it was painting for people who pay well for good paint jobs. But I've used Apple Barrel, Anita's and Folk Art paints. 97 cents or a dollar 25 for a bottle of paint that's 2 oz compared to GW's .4 oz for 4 or 5 dollars..........yeah! Haven't really tried too many other miniature company's paints though always go with the cheap stuff and get the results that I want. Dagoth Ur
Badab Black was part of the colour line that Coat D'Arms used to produce for GW, before GW started producing everything in house that is (AFAIK). I wouldn't know the exact wash name atm because I am not at home, but I've ordered multiple times from Coat D'Arms and it's the exact same paints that I remember from that time (Pigment density, colour, viscosity etc etc). Try finding a Coat D'Arms online supplier and order from there. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/328901-in-need-of-badab-black/#findComment-4600430 Share on other sites
Cloud Runner
You could always try the Vallejo game washes/inks etc as they're very close to the GW colours. And if you add a drop of Vallejo Matt varnish to the wash, it will darken everything down with a soft finish - or you could try satin if you wanted a semi-gloss shine. Can't recommend htem enough. miniaturepainter
I also concur. Read the fromthewarp article Ron wrote a few moons ago.https://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2012/05/devlan-mud-and-badab-black-wash.html Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/328901-in-need-of-badab-black/#findComment-4601003 Share on other sites
Khornate individual
Read the article "from the warp" and bought a couple of bottles of the Army Painter Dark Tone. Got them yesterday in the mail (which I thought was pretty quick for being the holiday season!). I tried it out on a bit to see how it looked compared to the figures that I've done already and it looks like I'll probably need two coats to make it look like Badab Black. I think I'll check out the Coat D'Arms like the Observer mentioned too.
