m0nolith
So I live in a place that is a bit weird when it comes to the humidity (Vancouver) and I tend to have a problem with frosting with matte varnish. Iv tried GW varnish and Vallejo matte applied with airbrush, with and without the acrylic airbrush thinner and I end up with frosting ether way, even with very thin coats. My question is: Is there are matte varnish out there that wont frost during humid days and wont change the color of the model or am I fantasizing about something that doesn't exist? PS; Do you use only matte or Gloss + Matte to protect your models? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/328924-matte-varnish/ Share on other sites

Bloody Legionnaire
So I live in a place that is a bit weird when it comes to the humidity (Vancouver) and I tend to have a problem with frosting with matte varnish. PS; Do you use only matte or Gloss + Matte to protect your models? You should always give a coat or two of gloss before you flat any model. The gloss is what gives the protection/helps the decals look painted on and then flat is really just to take off (or away from) the sheen. If you are getting frosting it may be due to applying the flat too "wet." I don't know your experience with airbrushing but you really want to dust on the flat in light passess until the desire amount of sheen/gloss is gone and you should be good from there. I have never used Vallejo or GW varnish/coat so I can't comment on what you should or should not be doing with those products. I use model masters clear acryl (gloss and flat) and it seems to get the job done. One thing I have noticed is if you too many coats of gloss on before you add a coat of flat it can give a kind of graying to the color. Definitely not a frost but not a super clear finished product either. A lot of modelers recommend mixing either gloss or something like pledge/future mixed in with the flat in order to yield more of a matte coat that is more forgiving than using straight flat. If I were you I'd practice on a few test models until you get your recipe right. good luck!
