New Custodes Transport + open day sneak peeks

I just look at the 40k versions and wonder why FW felt the need to make the 30k versions so much weaker.

These are the Golden bodyguards of the Emperor. Awe inspiring figures that have Marines talking in hushed voices when they appear.

I did say FW could surprise me and re-write their rules. In the meantime I'm just hoping we get 40k rules for all this cool stuff.

They'd feel the same way about the Phoenix Guard or the Suzerains is my point. 40k has a higher Attack to Kill speed than 30k does and focuses more killing power in characters than in squads, like 30K does. It's a difference in design philosophy. So a squad of 40k custodes will eat everyone's lunch on the charge, but it won't have access to the volume of equipment and vehicles their 30k counterparts have. 30k is more of a vehicle game too, and that shouldn't be ignored when considering why they are different.

I expect the tanks and Dreads to be good.

Don't misunderstand, I'm not expecting an auto win army, but what we've been given thus far, rules wise, is far removed from what I had in my mind when I imagined Custodes on the tabletop.

The 40k rules honestly got it more right in that regard.

Maybe it's the other way round.

FW looked at the crazy Royal Rumble that 40k is and thought it may be a good idea to adept their rules to that. ;)

Besides I don't give a dang thing about 40k rules at all and I still think that custodes are a good unit even without their final rule set.

Yeah, I think we should definitely wait and see the actual Talons army list before we make any power level assumptions. FW have said it is very different and very powerful. They'll likely have army-wide rules that apply over-and-above the preview rules we've seen.

As for the Coronus Grav-Carrier... I must admit it doesn't look like an Assault Transport. But who knows what else is coming - GW might make a plastic skiff-like transport (mentioned in some of the books) for the assault units. I could see the Coronus used for transporting the Sentinel Guard (like a Proteus full of Breachers) that don't necessarily want to charge.

Having the Pallas Grav-attack in squadrons is very cool, but I will wait to find out what those Arachnus blaze cannons are.

Contemptors are an interesting option. They're a brilliant model, no doubt! Does anyone else think their front armour looks reinforced? You can see it on the rear shots. Might be that they're going to be FA14...

I can see why FW appear to have scaled down the Custodes, much as I like obscenely expensive super units (points wise), this allows players to have an army of Custodes, rather than a single deathstar. It's the same thing GW does with space marines, a single Astartes should be able to chew through an 20 man guard squad without breaking a sweat, but that either results in a game where the Astartes auto win or you have only 3 marines fighting in 1500pt match. Bearing in mind that a Custodian Guard army is going to have these guys as their basic troops, making them powerful to fluff levels would mean you couldn't have an HQ and two troops under 1000pts.

My issue is, upon being scaled back in power they weren't scaled back in points.

3 guys with shields for 195.

I can literally bring 20 Marines for 225 or 20 Solar Auxilia for 100.

They are priced like a Deathstar but perform nothing like one.

And those 3 Custodes stand a really good chance at beating both of those in combat.

Ishagu, Seriously if you have the full army rules for them there's a whole ruck of people that want details about inferno. You've got a set of early release heres something to play with while you wait. That's it. Nothing more. You cannot compare an unfinished article to a completed one. You just can't.

I'm loving everything Custodes, I'm definitely doing an allied army to run with my Wolves. I can't wait to see what Valdor looks like drool.gif

Regarding the rules, I think FW goes for internal balance over pure fluffiness (otherwise Primarchs would be brutally over-powered). I trust that FW will do some proper playtesting and come up with a fun and (moderately) fluffy ruleset.

Just wish the SoS were getting a full army list....

And still no sign of SW helm upgrades....sad.png

Sisters will be in the Talons list though, and fighting beside the 10,000 - as they are known to do.

What I'm really hoping for? Access to certain mechanicum units so that I can make the Calistar defence force from Master of Mankind (no spoilers though please!)

Magos Dominus Dumbledore dies....

Great vehicle but the custodians are going to have a helluva time whacking their coneheads against the ceiling as they deploy...

I took 5 of the shields against Russ (thought i would play test the fight) and they held him up for longer than a game!

They also nearly killed Russ, he was on his final wound when he dropped the last Custode. So they do well enough!
