Best books from 2016

For best books, Path of Heaven blew my socks off.

Why would a loving parental figure do those things and screw up so badly? Maybe because, well, he wasn't a loving parental figure in the terms people vaguely assumed. If he was a loving dad, the problem is that nothing makes sense any more. He becomes a completely incompetent dad who can't understand or relate to anything or anyone, rather than - as the lore and TMoM paints him - a figure that is beyond human concerns; humanity is his focus, not patting his kiddywinkles on the head and kissing their booboos.

It was deemed that this was the only way to justify all of the mistakes and explain away the inconsistencies, which obviously the overwhelming majority of people got, so far. Otherwise, all of the endless stupid "lol bad dad" memes start to make sense.

I don't think the "lol bad dad" meme is going away any time soon. Two years ago, on another forum, a thread was posted with the title of:

"The Reason You Suck' speeches you've wanted to give to a fictional character"

My entry was:

The Emperor of Man.

"If you'd devoted even a fraction of your unparallelled intellect towards being a good father this entire mess wouldn't have happened!"

It got over a hundred likes. tongue.png

About the Emperor being above it all and only focusing on humanity, this quote by Mordin Solus from Mass Effect 3 springs to mind:

"I MADE A MISTAKE! I made a mistake...Focused on big picture. Big picture made of little pictures. Too many variables. Can't hide behind statistics. Can't ignore new data. My responsibility."

Especially the part about "Big picture made of little pictures."

And again to anyone who read MoM - 'Ra - scale the wall please'

yeah, i remembered your view of him as i was reading, so i was looking out for those dullard moments and didn't find any. he was a hot headed youth himself, (so i get the idea of the foil, even if i can agree he was annoying). as a more measured adult, he was playing catch up to an enemy primarch and performed astoundingly well.

his personality didn't make much of an impression on me though.

By dullard...I should probably clarify that I mean bland personality and not particularly bright

He doesn't come across as an idiot, just not very mentally agile if you will

oh and he was originally hand picked by the emperor ( possibly to become a custodes)

as kye

so he can't be all bad right?

Yes, off topic posts get nuked without comment or explanation. No explanation is necessary when a topic is about X and a reply is about Y, especially when Y isn't something that we cover here at the B&C.

The OP asked specifically about books from within and outside of Black Library's range:

So, I wanted to create a thread asking two questions:

1) What were your favorite releases from 2016 by BL/ Games Workshop? You can include BL novels here, or GW campaign books, or maybe Age of Sigmar stuff, just post here. If you're going to name several books, please rank them, and if you feel generous, maybe a short explanation as to why it's a favorite.

2) A separate category for the favorite books you read in 2016 that are not related to Warhammer.

So as far as this thread specifically is concerned, as created and asked by the original creator, both X and Y are relevant.

If that suddenly isn't allowed as part of the thread anymore, I'd recommend making a note to that extent in the OP and looking at people's answers on that question on the first few pages before things went into "I disagree with the author" and "Emperor is a jerk" land again.

I haven't seen anybody bemoaning the book highlighting outside of Black Library's printers yet - there's even been productive back and forth that the users themselves benefitted from. Instead of deleting those posts that are on-topic, why not get rid of the endless Emperor discussions instead, because those actually derail the topic every time they come up.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate you guys keeping an eye on things especially with how heated discussions can get here. But it seems like you missed the target a little.

While I respect the enthusiasm with which you attempt to argue with an admin about the rules of the B&C, allow me to remind you that the B&C is for discussion of the 40k hobby within the rules outlined when joining the forum. These are the rules we all agreed to follow when signing up.

Since you have apparently not read these rules despite acceptance being a requirement before opening an account, here are a couple more pertinent stipulations:

No spamming - Spam isn't simply multiple identical posts across the forums, it also includes pointless, off-topic or smart-alec posts anywhere on the board. Remember the B&C is here to promote constructive discussion of the 40K hobby and anything not contributing to this may be considered spam and deleted. Repeat offenders may also be Warned for such behaviour.

Some threads though get out of hand, go off topic, turn into a personal chat or various other reasons it gets off course from what is considered acceptable at the B&C. Threads that break the rules of the B&C are subject to closure. It is at the discretion of the forum moderators as to if/when a thread will be closed as a disciplinary measure.

Following your request for the handling of off topic this discussion is now closed as per the rules.
