Evocati, The Shadow Crusade strikes

The call to war was nothing new to a warrior of the Thirteenth Legion, especially legionnaires of the Fourth Company of the Second Chapter. This one was going to be different though, we all knew that. It left a sour taste in the mouth. For warriors bound by blood, by honour and by oath, betrayal was an alien concept. More deplorable than fear and cowardice, for that is merely succumbing to the base human instinct for survival, no matter how base it manifests itself. We were going to be fighting our brothers, men bound by the same oaths as us, with the same training as us, with the same equipment as us. It was just wrong.
We knew that many of our brothers wouldn’t be walking out of this one, how could we, fighting mirrors of ourselves? Of course, there was that part of me that was curious. Fighting astartes would be the ultimate challenge and the killer that was bred into me was relishing the chance to prove my supremacy.

But I digress, my story, the 204th’s story, doesn’t start there. It starts over a century before what people are quaintly calling a civil war. It begins at the muster on Macragge just over one hundred and fifty years ago when we were formally reunited with our father, Roboute Guilliman.

Evening brothers, so it has been a long time since I last posted, nigh on a year I believe. As happens to all of us, life caught up with the hobby and my priorities changed. The bug has caught me again, however, so I have returned, brushes behind the ear and fingers stuck together from misplaced glue.

I shall be making an Armatura themed Ultramarines Legion army, with an aim to have the better part of a company in infantry. I doubt that there'll be any armour featuring because I don't have any and this project is eye-wateringly expensive as it is without compounding the matter.

This is the army list in the loosest sense of the word as I doubt I'll ever play..

I believe there was a small throwaway line in Betrayer that said that the Evocati were cloaked so I'm taking this literally as far as I can, these are the legion's veterans and its teachers so I think it's appropriate and I'll be able to have some good fun weathering them up too!
(All credit for the cloaks goes to Brother Chaplain Kage's GUIDE
They're a touch taller than normal marines courtesy of a bit of a boost at the waist. After having done true-scale for so long I can't quite get to terms with 'normal' sized marines and this is a relatively painless compromise.

I'll leave you with a family photo while I wait for paints to arrive.

Hopefully you've stuck it out to the end. I shall share the master plan in the next update.

Great start. Elements of my force are also Armaturan in origin, specifically a group of Evocatii (Suzerains) who survived the carnage (and are now disgraced) - I also went with the cloaked thing. Your take looks fantastic so far, I really like the GS work and how you've blended it seamlessly with a Kage pattern cloak. Will you be backing up your Breachers with a Vindicator squadron? ;) Thinking of the scene in Betrayer...

I was a bit busier today than I hoped so I didn't get as far as I wanted. That being said, I have some reasonable inroads into the breachers today.

I've gone a little bit further off the beaten track with some of these poses, which is why they've taken a  bit longer than usual.

This one is for the Vexilla, aggressive and belligerent which I think is appropriate for the defender of the squad's honour. I think that the nature of breachers gives you quite a bit to play with in how you bring out the model's character. The post above implies the cool professionalism of a Legionary facing down the barbarian hordes in Gaul whilst this one is shouting the odds at the top of his suitably enhanced voice.

The joys of capes helping to add the impression of motion to a stationary model.

This is the first stage of adding the battle into the models themselves. That poor traitorous soul at his feet is about to get his head caved in in one of two ways by a tower shield. I haven't quite decided which way up he'll be yet when he meets his end, so any thoughts on that would be appreciated :)

This is more just showing the quality of the model off to be honest, the only thing I have done to him as yet is the base. I'll give him a cape and I'll keep the original bare head. It feels a bit wrong even doing that to such a lovely sculpt.

Finally a group shot. I think that you can see a vox head in the background there - designated Vox for the tactical squad, some people get all the fun jobs!

That's all tonight folks, much of these are WIP WIPs, still quite a lot to do on these but I think that they're starting to take shape now!

Any thoughts or feedback is more than welcome :)

Well thought out conversions going on here. Excellent start. One more amazing Heresy Ultra log and I'll have a soft spot for the Boys in Blue in my cold dead heart biggrin.png

Thanks :) I'd be careful where your affections take you!

Loving that group shot the poses look awesome when they're all together like that. Also damn that Vexilla is nicely done, you really captured the personality with the pose biggrin.png

Definitely brings it to life better when there's more than just one!

Lovely conversions, but the first breacher with his sword and shield in a 'come get some' pose looks like his shield arm is made of elastic. I would consider shortening it through the elbow.

I've only noticed that because of you, so ta. The poor fellow is under the knife once more, as if having an additional lung and heart shoved in, he now gets his arms sawn up too.

Thanks for the feedback so far, it's definitely the time to get all the issues ironed out before I get to the meat of the project!

Today's update is quite small but significant for me, on a personal note at least - this is the first time I've picked up a brush for about two years I think...and you can tell.

Thus far the main thing that I'm looking at is the colour of the armour, I personally prefer a darker blue than the Gamesworkshop one but I may go a shade lighter than this for the rest. I haven't quite decided yet, it seems quite muted, which I suppose is appropriate considering they're in a big urban war zone and dust would do that to you. It does make the battle damage more difficult to make pop though so I'm still on the fence.

I'll probably finish up the details tomorrow if I have time.

This next image shows the process by which I'll be painting my marines and why I'm a little bit concerned about the balance of the shade of blue I'm going for. These browns and metals are acting as my undercoat after a very light prime and have been given a lick of satin varnish. I'll give them some chipping fluid before I put the blues on top. This is how I did my weathering for my Luna Wolves and it worked wonders, so hopefully, it will for my Ultras.

That's all tonight folks; thanks for looking :)
