Azaryn's Lamenters

Made a trip to my local store did some painting tests with the guys there ... Not too amazed with the results tbh ... Based corax white, sprayed averland sunset. Drybrushed Yriel Yellow, Flash Gitz & Dorn yellow. Washed with Casandora Yellow ...

The brush strokes stand out.

I think that the double-spray is far too thick. Whatever yellow you apply over that, the details are mostly gone. :(

If you care for a simple but effective method of doing the yellow, there's this tutorial by Tyler on his blog "Mengel Miniatures": link.

Ultimately, you must remember that you are painting a notoriously tricky colour; as it's 90% of the finished model, it's probably worth spending a bit of time on, and then finding shortcuts on other other areas (like bolters, pouches, etc., which can be: basecoat - sharp highlight - wash) to speed painting up.

Good luck, and I look forward to seeing your progress! :)

There is something awesome about a refurbished army. Even more so since this one will be a Lamenter force.

I think I just got giddy when I cleaned up my marines to repaint them for another chapter.

I also agree with Major_Gilbear about going with Tyler's method. I myself want to use it for my yellows as it is one of the nicer shades I have seen and not that much of a headache at all. *I used to have an Imperial Fist army and trying to paint yellow for them made me lose a few years of my life due to stress.turned.gif

Aye that would happen. I tried drybrushing yellow power armour before, never again, think you'd have better results edge highlighting over a base tone rather than layering lighter colours.

My tip for a relatively easy but effective yellow would be white spray, averland basecoat, agrax/reikland shade in ONLY the recesses - not an overall wash, neaten that with averland, edge highlight all raised lines with a brighter tone, neaten again with averland (if you're as sloppy with edge highlights as me - takes the pressure off not having to be perfect), edge highlight corners with an even lighter tone than the previous stage, neaten if needed, done.

Thank you for the advice, will try this out, which yellow would you use to highlight? I have Yriel, Flash Gitz & Dorn.

That's great - Yriel for the first highlight then flashgitz for the sharpest. It's a scheme I knicked and adapted from an old warseer project log - 'by our will these walls will never fall' - I can't get links to function on my work pc but googling will give you results so you can see if it works for you.

Alterntively, Emma from Warhammer TV put up a simplier guide (only 3 steps if you don't count building up the first layer), which is on video (handy to paint to) - if you google 'warhammer tv painting imperial fists' it should be the first result - involves white spray, yriel yellow basecoat, reikland shading and a bone edge highlight if I remember correctly, looks decent too and maybe more a a 'lamenters' type yellow.

Yellow is one of those colours that is just an all around tough nut to paint. Keep your paint thin, keep trying and making mistakes until you get a method that works - it is rare to see a Imperial Fist or Lamenters army on this board with the same shade of yellow - each person finds their comfort zone, and they buy it with practise.
