basing questions for ad mech

howy everyone!

I saw that new Magos model and finally caved. I Purchased the books and some models to start with, but I'm trying to figure out my basing situation. I am planning on using the Martian Underearth texture paint to do the Mars landscape, but I wanna throw some rocks on top of the model that match the color of the texture paint. I think it would be weird having rocks that crack, so I need to figure out what regular paint matches the color of the texture paint. any ideas? I'm not interested in doing grey rocks like in the studio paint job, I don't really understand why there would be anything not caked in red/orange. thanks for the help!

Go the other route. The Martian texture 'paints' can be dry brushed, so paint your rock whatever red/orange tones you like, place it, then drybrush the crackled base to match.

A good wash to darken the cracks also adds some depth. I tend to use a brown (Agrax Earthtone) on reds like Martian Ironearth.

Mars does have grey rocks though, but i myself haven't gone with the common mars bases even though my Knight World New Ares still looks like that, because i don't see my forces as fighting at home much. I use my martian ironearth on other miniatures from other games :)

Before Martian Ironearth came out though i painted some crackled agrellan earth as martian soil. Alas i don't recall the exact colours used and foolishly didn't write it down but the pictures are here http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293094-knights-of-house-cydonia-taghmata-omnissiah-and-skitarii/page-7?do=findComment&comment=3945072 and here http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293094-knights-of-house-cydonia-taghmata-omnissiah-and-skitarii/page-7?do=findComment&comment=3963576 but i think i started with rhinox hide, then drybrushed (khorne?) red, then several layers of lightly drybrushed orange (ryza rust dry paint) then black wash then another light ryza.

But the idea of drybrushing ironearth seems a good one.

If you want the colors exactly the same, just use a very thin coat of the Martian ironearth. I did that with some rocks using Agrellan Earth and if the coat is thin enough it won't crackle.

Thats what I did. A thin layer will not crack open.

First attempt, I'm probably gonna give it another go with some other colors to see what I like the most. overall I think I'm getting there! the darker spot is from another wash I tried, it's a bit to dark for my liking. Anyone got any more information on rocks on mars? is there really grey colored rocks laying around? I will say the studio grey rocks do a nice job of breaking up the colors on the base. I've got decisions to make!
