Noctem Cultor
Hi all, Just putting together three stolen flyers for my Night Lords and was thinking about making the windows look polarised like sunglasses etc. Originally I was thinking of painting them gold and then adding a coating to give the rainbow sheen look. Ardcoat with WD-40 didn't work it was a long shot but thought I might get lucky. Any ideas on something that will do the job? Thanks -Noctem Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329716-how-to-get-a-rainbow-oilpolarised-effect/ Share on other sites
Gordon Shumway
That's a tough one. Maybe tamiya smoke and then transparent colors like blue and green in concentric circles? Beaky Brigade
I was actually thinking about this the other day, I don't know if you were going for a different effect, but I want to have the distortion you see on aircraft windows from a distance. The reasons behind it are well understood science:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin-film_interference As a practical effect on the model, how about several very thin washes or inks of the colours of the rainbow layered over each other. You could paint on the inside of the canopy so it won't ever be handled and rub off once the canopy is secured in place. Major_Gilbear
What you need for the effect are colour-shifting pearlised paints. If you search for "Pentart Chameleon Pearl Effect Paint" in Google, you should find places that sell such a paint and can choose a colour that you'd like. Edit: it seems that B&C's very own Kastor Kreig had a similar idea/product previously for Alpha Legion: link. Alternatively, you can buy dry powdered pigment flakes which can be added to clear nail polish to produce the iridescent colour-shifting effect that you're after. If you do this, be sure to test it on a base or something first in order to get the finish smooth - nail polish is tricky to apply and get smooth over areas much bigger than nails! . VulkansDynasty
that's a tricky one. The best I could come up with would be to get some of that spray paint that has the effect and use that. Otherwise this is an effect that I would see being very hard to pull off. Commissar Ibram Gaunt
Would careful use of gloss inks mixed with a mediuk to thin applied is several layers work? I managed to obtain some of that paint based on seeing it in Kastor Kreig's thread and while it is quite cool, I don't think it will achieve the desired effect. Maybe these interference paints would do the trick? https://www.goldenpaints.com/products/colors/interference-colors Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329716-how-to-get-a-rainbow-oilpolarised-effect/#findComment-4619725 Share on other sites
Major_Gilbear
I think part of the trick to getting these paints to work correctly is (1) the base colour underneath, and (2) getting a smooth enough surface for the paint to reflect as evenly as possible. A good place to find out what/how these paints are supposed to work is YouTube - just search for custom car/bike spray jobs with the relevant paint effect key works, and you'll find a *lot*. Of course, these inevitably all use automotive paints and fully-equipped workshops, but the principle of the effect is the same and it's educational viewing (honest!). An alternative is to buy the dry powdered "raw flake" and add it to a suitable medium - like the nail polish suggestion. This is probably as reasonably close as you'd get to the industrial-style paint that's simple to apply and won't cost too much.
