dramagod2
I know a lot of people have been nonplussed by the new detachment but one thing that stuck out to me was that it can be used to allow an icarus array dunecrawler to squadron with neutron lasers to recieve the 4++ invul while still being able to shoot at other targets. I don't know if it's worth the points but a unit of 2 neutron lasers and 1 icarus array is 335 i believe. An engineseer would give them access to PotMS and (correct me if I'm wrong) since the icarus array is a single weapon, it would allow all of its profiles to shoot at a separate target than the main unit. Granted the cost would be 375 without any servitors but the dunecrawlers would have a 4++, IWND plus the engineseer to affect repairs. Does this sound like a viable strategy or is it to expensive to be worthwhile? Perry
You make a great point about machine spirit and mixed weapon Onager squadrons, they will be very hard to destroy with IWND and 4++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329948-dunecrawlers-in-the-grand-convo/#findComment-4626049 Share on other sites
Tyriks
You also don't need to add an enginseer. The enginseer (from C:IA) doesn't benefit us with PotMS but any hq in the GC within range of the onagers will do. I was considering this as the 4++ is nice but only HPB onagers in a squad of 3 has ever been anything but massive overkill for me. Charlo
Seems legit, but sadly the only real use for the detachment... I suppose a shooty Knight doesn't have to worry about where it faces it's shield for constant 4++. It also lets you easily load up on Dominus. Problem is, what do you give up for this? Potential Canticles on everything from other formations. Scout from Skitarii. Reusing a canticle from Cult. Obj Sec on your Rangers/ Kataphrons who will be sitting back anyway. If going for an Onager and Knight focused build, for sure this is good as you can get some real resilient dakka going. Between Cawl's canticles, the formation buffs and repair rolls your machines WILL. NOT. DIE. But for a more balanced army, other combos of detachments and formations are better. Well, we can still take the regular skitarii maniple along side to have some more mobility. We would just have to take min-max units in the grand covocation, something like 3 ranger squads and maybe a kataphron destroyer squad with a dominus and an enginseer. Then we just take onagers in the grand convocation and have better tanks over the regular skitarii one. it's doable, but still sucks that we have to invest that many guys to do something with so little benefits.
