Marshal Loss
Sons of Horus. I've been a CSM fan since the moment my friends and I decided to start collecting in primary school (I liked the topknots & horns), and adored Abaddon and the Black Legion basically because they looked badass. Sporadic references to a certain big baddy named 'Horus' in 2nd & 3rd ed material, combined with an older White Dwarf showing Mike McVey's Horus vs. the Emperor diorama firmly cemented me as a Horus fan. Add to this Index Astartes and Adrian Smith's latest Horus vs the Emperor and the end result is a rabid fanboy, and I've been mad about them ever since. I wasn't too hot on the Horus Heresy at all (was of the opinion that they shouldn't do the novels at all in order to leave it a mystery) until FW did HH: Betrayal. My girlfriend bought it for me immediately after it came out thinking it would make a nice gift that showed she cared, next thing you know I'm devouring books and buying models by the bucket load. She probably regrets that decision. I absolutely adore the depth and character FW have given them. Brutal aesthetic, fast and furious combined arms playstyle and some astonishing models - what's not to like? 1000 Sons
I like the tragic legions. Thousand Sons, betrayed by Horus, Tzeentch, the Emperor, the Wolves, to the end they are still trying to prove it was never their fault. They were always loyal. World Eaters. Angron is forever in grief of the loss of his gladiator rebels who he was taken from, and has that grudge against the Emperor for taking his glorious death away. His legion was so desperate to have their primarch they did everything for him to accept them to the point of taking on the nails, yet he never shows any attachment to them. Death Guard. Mortarions hatred of tyrants and psykers leads him to Horus, only to discover he has chosen the side of witches, daemons, and madmen but is stuck with his decision. Then is left adrift in the warp and watching his legion begin to fall apart is forced to make another decision that he doesn't want to make but goes to nurgle to 'save' his legion. Lord Blackwood
The Wolves And The Imperial Fists tie at the top for meThe Imperial Fists because they remind me a lot of my father , being a hardworking guy straight forward, professional , the sort of person who gets up and goes about his grind because its what he has to do. ( Not to mention the Zealous Son and the Intellectual son ) Then the Wolves because they have always been an extremely appealing legion to me , the feral nature of em , the fact that its true but not true that they are savages , the fact that they are professional soldiers in their own rite they just go about things differently but not in the same vein as say the nightlords. Coincidentally Russ and Dorn are my two favorite primarchs followed by the Primarch of my runner up legion The Lion and the Dark Angels. bluntblade
The Scars for me. An odd mingling of savagery and nobility, and one of the most human Legions. Son of Carnelian
My favorite legion? That's a pretty wide open question. I have a different answer for every facet of the hobby. My favorite to paint and model are the army I play, the Blood Angels. The army I like best in terms of their rules are probably the Alpha Legion, because they both reflect that legion so well and because they're damn tricksy. But my fluff gland overpowers my other augmentations, so fluff wise, I gotta go with the White Scars. Scars had a profound effect on me when I read it. Chris Wraight has a way of imbuing the Fifth Legion with such a potency that Scars retains its punch even on your second or third reading. They're a legion built on contradiction. Eternally on the fringes of the Imperium yet perhaps most in touch with the spirit of the Great Crusade. They have Librarians but deliberately limit their powers. They must practice art between making war. They cut their own flesh as part of their induction ceremony, yet the notion of vanity and wasted effort are alien to them. On and on and on until you realize that even if you love them like I do, you might never fully grasp their character as a legion. The harder you try and distill them into one archetype, i.e. Mongols who ride jetbikes, the more evidence mounts that you've mischaracterized them (just like their allies and enemies do). In a world where we have a Black Library series of novels and a Forge World series of army books, plus the thousands of fan theories and memes that populate the Horus Heresy, one can start to feel like they know everything about the setting. But the Scars' greatest virtue lies in the fact that, by their nature, the truth about them will always remain contradictory. The past ten years has seen the rapid unveiling of concepts and ideas about the Heresy that we never knew before. Yet the Scars remain mysterious, and thus potentially most valuable. Black Cohort
I don't think I can go with just one. I was incredibly torn when plastic heresy stuff looked like it was going to happen and I needed to decide on an army. I have always loved the Imperial Fists, from Dorn, the son who was willing to do any task his father asked even if he didn't like it and couldn't understand how his brothers didn't do the same. Or Sigismund and his Templars, the whole Emperor's Champion bit is awesome. Even how Dorn's legion operates so much like him, even if it costs them greatly like at phall. My 30k army is Salamanders, partially because BoC had models that better fit what I wanted to do with them vs Imperial fists or death guard. I love their simple yet elegant colours, their humanity and their love of all things fire related. Unfortunately they haven't been blessed with the best of black libraries writers, but their forgeworld background is awesome. Third is death guard, particularly pre-heresy, though if I was ever to do chaos it would be them. Their brutal way of war, lack of concern with aesthetics of equipment, pre-heresy colour scheme it is all awesome. The tragedy of what happens to the legion and Primarch is one of most tragic things that happens in the horus heresy. depthcharge12
Pure unadulterated fanboyism? Dark Angels. Savage barbarian badasses? SoH and WEs. Who I'd probably fit in with and like the most? Emperor's Children. Who has super cool fluff and ethos? But I would hate to try because I feel I would mess up their paint scheme? White Scars and Death Guard. Brother-Chaplain Kage
Which Legion is my favorite? Why, all of them, of course. The Legions form the entire structure upon which the 40k universe is built. The Emperor created them and the Primarchs shaped them in their own way, but without the Legiones Astartes, there is no Great Crusade. There is no heresy for Horus to enact. And there is no broken Emperor sitting on his Golden Throne to keep humanity hanging on by its fingernails. Without them, there is no 30k or 40k. The reasons why I love all of the Legions is legion. Huggtand
If its a good author I like all of them but i have a special place in my heart for the wolves. It was the first models I saw when I stared with rogue trader and they struck a cord in me. What I most love about them, that thankfully have remained through all changes, is ther wonderful sense of humor Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330239-whats-your-favourite-legion-and-why/#findComment-4633835 Share on other sites

Supe robot gangster #1
Emperors children. The first piece of artwork I ever saw that was 40k/30k was the old pic of ranks of emperors children being addressed by the emperor. I even painted my space crusade marines to be pre heresy back when I was a wee lad! The ethos of the legion I feel also describes my mindset quite well, strive for perfection in all endeavours (not that it ever is perfect mind Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330239-whats-your-favourite-legion-and-why/#findComment-4633848 Share on other sites
Jimm
Blood angels for me. Always loved that angelic exterior whilst secretly holding back a burning inner rage. Shame sometimes that rage takes control and things get messy. And all his brothers know Jesus is not to be messed with. On the flip side I really like the word bearers. Looking to put there faith in something before being slapped down. Did they stay down, hell no. I like the carefully plotted treachery and corruption of horus and to top it off they killed loads of ultramarines who I hate. Oh and argel tal is a beast, dam you Erebus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330239-whats-your-favourite-legion-and-why/#findComment-4633852 Share on other sites

I say this of course and I currently have a painted model at least (some have more than one) for every legion but the children (not counting my fluro pink and black 40k army), partly due in fact that I just can't get the perfect colour that I'm happy with One of my all-time favourite pieces of 40K art is the Istvan III one with a loyal Child of the Emperor about to impale a Son of Horus with his chainsword. Corswain
Dark Angels. I like my Space Marines as knights in space and the Dark Angels are the knightliest of Space Marines. That being said, I genuinely find every Legion has something great to offer. My current favourites are Night Lords and Iron Warriors and that's what my hobby focus is on at the moment. Legatus
My reasons are fairly mundane. My first contact with the wonderful world of 40K was via the old 'Space Crusade' boardgame, and that had blue, red and yellow Space Marines. When I then got into 40K proper in 2nd Edition there were four Chapters with a Codex, the blue and the red Marines and then some green and some grey/blue Marines. The blue Marines were the more straight up good guys, while the red and the green Marines had a more darker streak, and the grey/blue ones were more feral, so I picked the blue ones first. But it helps that I enjoy a "roman" theme, and I really like the character of a disciplined force geared toward efficiency, and the notion of strictly adhering to a code of war. Most Chapters have something going for them, and eventually I started small forces of the red, the green and the grey/blue Marines as well. But my main army always remained the blue Marines. I was going to say that the red chainsaw butcher Chaos Marines from hell are my second favourite, but then they weren't yet the red chainsaw butcher Chaos Marines from hell when they were still a "Legion", and as a Legion they weren't all that interesting to be honest. So I guess they are my second favourite Marine army, but not really my second favourite "Legion". Iron Hands Fanatic
By now, I've got a set answer for these :P My love for the Iron Hands started with "Bionic Space Marines? yeah!" , but as I read more about them, they evoked the Grim-Darkness of the setting so fantastically I couldn't resist. Clinical, remorseless warriors who revile the very flesh that makes them, who are constantly pushing to replace their flawed flesh with the perfection of the machine? Glorius. Even when the whole 'The Flesh is Weak' mantra is removed for the Great Crusade & Heresy, the Xth Legion is still incredibly grim. They're an inch away from being a traitor Legion. They're polar opposites to the humanitarian, moral Salamanders to whom they're so commonly compared. The Clan system means they even hate each other. With Ferrus' death, they will stop at nothing to exact vengeance - they'll resort to measures which even the traitor Legions would have qualms with. The Iron Hands are the vilest, most brutal of the Loyalist Legions by a mile. Boy do I dig that. Idomeneus
I honestly couldn't choose a favourite. I seem to be addicted to playing the good guys, but even then a lot of my favourite characters come from the traitor legions. Equally I couldn't choose a least favourite legion, because every time I do (Word Bearers, World Eaters and Night Lords) goddamn A D-B comes along and writes a awesome book about them and I love them. quinnwolf
Despite the wolfywolf cliches I've been VI legion for 23 years or so. Was a Space Wolf since 3rd edtion but the recent incarnations are way way over the top, so the 30K setting effectively allowed me to reboot with the more austere Vlka Fenryka. Pelts, trinkets and acute senses yes. Riding wolves, wolf sleds and freeze rays no. Having said that, have been tempted to start all the other legions at one point or another. Leaning towards a Deathguard army at the moment (will never happen). Lord_Ikka
Dark Angels. I'll echo what Corswain said about Knights in Space and add that the mysterious nature of the DA is fascinating. Plus, they have all the cool tech toys that the other Legions don't. Oh, yeah, and they were the first Legion and marched under the Emperor himself! KBA
White Scars. And I don't even White Scars. What impacted me with the 5th Legion was their devil-may-care, hunt-where-I-want, laugh-while-I-kill attitude. Add in the especially tasty polarity within the legion and it created something dynamic, mysterious, and wholly interesting -- 3 essential qualities necessary for spinning the kind of plot yarns I absolutely love. Kelborn
That's easy. Bill King got me into Warhammer, so on loyalists side: The Vlka Fenryka With Chris' novels my love for them just got more intensified. Dan did a good job in fleshing out there non wolfy mc wulfenson 30k character with Prospero Burns. Regardless of what pov or criticism I'm reading, the Wolves will forever be my most favorite one. Back when I started diving into the lore of Warhammer, I discovered the Burning of Prospero and after reading A Thousand Sons, my most favorite Lwgion on the traitor side was clear to me: The Thousand Sons A tragic story, a flawed Britherhood and the most powerful space wizards out there? Count me in! Since then, the story arc of both SW & TS is THE arc for me. That's why I was so eager for Warzone Fenris, Wrath of Magnus and upcoming INFERNO! ^^ Nevertheless, there were / are others who I declared my favorites as well: Back then, when I started with HH and Warhammer: Raven Guard, Salamanders Nowadays, I would place these Legions on my second place in my ranking: White Scars; just because of Chris! He did the impossible and created a Legion which was so bland and boring to me back then. By his work, I fell in love with these noble but stl unpredictable wild cards. :D Alpha Legion / Night Lords; NL like the Scars, solely because of Aaron's work. They are a way to satisfy the vicious, baaaad side of me. ^^ AL because of their secretive ways, story and their HH index article done by FW. It's one of my favorites within the black HH codices. Just lovin' both of them. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330239-whats-your-favourite-legion-and-why/#findComment-4634840 Share on other sites
