Hfran Morkai
Hello, Now I have seen the rules for the VIth and with Inferno on its way I'm starting to look into lists. I'm curious as to what size points game you'd recommend to someone who hasn't played since late 4th/early 5th edition? Thank you for your time. Slips
100% depends on your group. Usually 2-2.5k is the "average" for 30k but some areas use less some use more, like mine, where 3-3.5k is standard. helterskelter
Average list sizes range from 2k to 2.5k and depending on your play style that's not all that many models to dig into. Saying that, wolves can get HQ and 40 of their troop dudes for under 650 points so really you want to look to who you're playing games with (or likely to be) and match to their points Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330646-recommended-starting-force-points-size/#findComment-4646034 Share on other sites
SalvationOfReason
You might also want to try smaller games (500-1200) in Zone Mortalis, just to get you back into the feel of things, learn/relearn tactics, how your chosen Legion works on the field, etc, especially if you're looking at running Legion-specific models (ex- Emperors Children, learning how field Phoenix Terminators and Palatine Blades, test loadouts, etc, properly) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330646-recommended-starting-force-points-size/#findComment-4646221 Share on other sites

Brofist
Our group has been running mostly 1500, 1850, and 2000 point games. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330646-recommended-starting-force-points-size/#findComment-4647048 Share on other sites
Corswain
I kinda build my intitial lists the other way round. For example - I buy Betrayal at Calth and see what I can build out of it. You could easily build a 1500 points force out of one box. It may not be the most competetive list but it's a reliable and affordable start. Play a bit and figure out what you want/need to expand. I guess, in summary, 1500 - 1800 points. 2000 - 2500 does seem to be the average though. Jackalwolf
The game lends itself to nice steps as many have mentioned: Step 1 - 750 to 1,000 points: Zone Mortalis games, lets you have a feel for a Legion before investing heavily Step 2 - 2,000 to 2,500 points: Average 'fast' pickup game kind of style, think of a 40k 1,500 as a comparison Step 3 - 3,000 to 3,500 points: Where the HH really comes into it's own and it gives you enough space to try the big guns without going all Apoc Step 4 - 4,000 plus: Rarer games which require more time and preparation. Also at times the FOC feels a bit stretched beyond 4,000. Most places house-rule at this level things like you can have a Primarch and a LOW, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330646-recommended-starting-force-points-size/#findComment-4647551 Share on other sites
