Legio Astorum WIP - Mechanicum Knight Army [Updated Pics]

Recommended Posts

Legio Astorum WIP (Mechanicum Knight Army)

So for last years annual mega apocalypse, and after being out of the game since 2nd Ed, biting off a bit more than I realised I could chew I bought a Warhound Titan (alcohol may have been involved).

Anyway following on from my old (think 1995) Epic armies I obviously chose the Warp Runners.

The Warhound looks a bit like this:

Anyway there is a full WIP log over on Dakka here if anyone is interested: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/660919.page

The work on the Warhound got postponed by more Da and not being quite sure how to highlight and shade the large expanses of armour plate.

For this years challenge I decided to enter a Tournament having never done it before and build a new army for this and this years apoc.

So being ambitious (read: Stupid) and taken by the look of the Atrapos Knights I decided on a knight army. The partial justification being it would be a good test bed for painting techniques for the Warhound... I decided I wanted them to be Legio Astorum aligned Mechanicum Knight Army.

Obviously to make life easier and cheaper I decided I wanted to use the FW Mechanicum Knight armour panels to keep the Mechanicum feel across the whole army.

For the tournament I'm building the initial four knights in a Baronial Court for 1850 points. Eventually there will be 8 in an Exulted Court and A Baronial Court. The tournament force is the first part of this.

So back to the Baronial Court WIP - the force is 2 Atrapos and 2 Crusaders.

They are all built and magnetised at the waist and guns inc carapace weapons. The initial colours and patterning was all done by spraying in parts and masking/maskol

I've got most of the armour panels shaded / highlighted so I've put together one Atrapos to see what they looked like together and if more work is needed. Obviously there's a lot of details still need working on.

I'll post some more as I get some more details painted in and as I get more knights painted.

As always comments, criticism and advice appreciated.

Edited for stupid phone not putting in image tags...

Don't know if anyone is interested however:

Started on the first of the weapons thought that the vivid green would be a good contrast to the ubiquitous Blue/yellow/white colour scheme.

Next job along with all the other knight painting tasks is it do some background reading and come up with some appropriate fluff regarding a Titan legion aligned Mechanicum Knight Army.

Turns out A LOT of background / fluff has happened between 2nd Ed and now...

I still can't seem to see the pics. Maybe try posting to Imgur?

Really!? Bah! I tried Flickr and all it did was post the links. Maybe I'll have to try Imgur... I'm obviously too old for this lark.

I hadn't really come up with a significance to the colours further than them being aligned with the Legio Astorum and thus wore their colours. Slightly regretting not painting the knight heads yellow actually to this end.

Cheers. All the panels and metal work have been sprayed (Army Painter rattle cans). Still got to get the transfers on - I have FW Titan and Legio Astorum transfer kit and learn some weathering techniques!

The posing wasn't to bad compared to the Warhound. That was a real PITA.

There is a lot of pose availiable without having to convert or cut like a plastic kit knight.

My other Atrapos is stepping up even more and even that wasn't too bad. Plenty of masking tape and blu-tac and trial fitting. Superglue activator is a must.

Hi OHH!

Great looking stuff.

You asked about highlighting the Titan, don't. Do this instead...

Oil wash shading. Please please please make sure you varnish well before doing to though.

Also, have you considered joining the TOC?

I love the painting scheme. What I would do at this point is to create a backstory linking all of your models. E.g. For mine, one knight Paladin of House Taranis has been sent to find all the lost knight suits of the House. I'm calling it, the Lost of House Taranis.
