Into the Iris: A Sons of Horus Blog

After several years of being effectively out of the hobby, I'm back in with Horus Heresy. As expected, I planned to go Death Guard. As you can tell by the topic title, that didn't stick. I couldn't get a scheme I was happy with, and decided to try something totally different (for me). I decided on Sons of Horus after fussing with colors and subjecting several models to all sorts of paint test.

No fluff yet other than they will be the 38th Company.

Painting is very clean. Again, unusual for me historically. I may go back and chip the armor up later, but for now, I'm very pleased with the results.

Main Green Color: Starting from black, I build up thin layers of Reaper MSP Jungle Moss, Highland Moss, and the main color of Pale Lichen. Trim the recesses with GW Nuln Oil, cleanup, then highlight with a mix of Pale Lichen and Leather White.
Metal Trim: GW Runelord Brass, washed with Nuln Oil, highlighted with Runefang Silver.
Metal Bits: GW Leadbelcher, washed with Nuln Oil, highlighted with Runefang Silver.
Base: GW Dryad Bark, highlighted with Sylvaneth Bark, and highlighted again with a mix of Sylvaneth Bark and Reaper Polished Bone.

Contemptor-Mortis
This was left over from my DG plans. Model was already assembled so I knocked the legion icons off and went with it. The gold FW decals are pretty bright so I had to tone them down with Nuln Oil a bit.

Looking good man! I don't think there will ever be a right way of painting SoH...there are literally 50 shades of green from what I've seen :P lol

I really like your pastel green, but I decided to go for the latter scheme of the SoH when they are becoming more chaotic and darker. I can't wait to see what other units you have in store!

My only recommendation if you decide to do some light chipping is to go for Rhinox hide as it can look like dirt or the paint flaking off to a darker armor primer beneath.
