Air cav or artillery heavy can't make my mind up

Hi all

Im looking to get back to running my guard for a few upcoming torneys here in the uk. I normally go mech heavy but fancy something different. so I was thinking of air cav or artillery heavy as I'm not a fan of mass infantry. ( hurts my back moving that much infantry ) would anyone have any tips or tactics to help me out? Or am I wasting my time

An artillery list ideally has plenty of infantry to help protect them as they're even squishier than tanks and will fold to close assault, so sounds like you want an air cavalry force if you don't want too many troopers? What sort of list would this be, are we talking Elysians or something else?

Guard aren't great at an airborne list, I'm not up to date on all the Guard formations so I'm not sure if one of them can help you out? Otherwise the Stormies can do a flyer list, though that's not ordinary Guard. I'm not sure what your options are short of going unbound confused.gif I know we have some airy fairies around the barracks (or rather, zooming around above it and taking up space at the bar?) so hopefully one of them can help thumbsup.gif

Closest thing would be to take the flyer formation of 3 vendettas or valks (mix and match) and load them with vets

Grab a couple of hellrain formations (depending on detachment limits) and the sprinkle with some ground support so youre not tabled if the birds don't show up.

Defense line with comms relay would be handy.

Keep in mind though you despite having a lot of flyers you wont have much mobility without some mobilized ground support. Or risk putting your flyers into hover to grab objectives.

7th is all about mobility.

Alternatively depending on what your thoughts are there's always emperors wrath artillery formation with daemon summoning psykana division (ugh)

Not elysians as forgeworld list for the most part are not allowed at uk events so I guess something else

Will never understand this, the overpowered forgeworld units are all from armies which have the most powerful standard codices anyway so not sure how that will ever keep anything balanced.

Anyway back on topic, all the fun/good artillery is in the Imperial Armour books as the minimum 24" range of a Basilisk can cause some issues on a normal 6x4 board if you're fighting a mobile army and although Wyverns can lay down withering anti infantry fire they lack the sheer punch of something beautiful like the Medusa.

There is the option I suppose of dropping an aegis defence line or similar down and just chucking some basilisk/wyverns behind that with a platoon of infantry with heavy weapons squads to provide a buffer and some extra anti infantry firepower and then some chims with vets in for objective capture.

Can't give an opinion on the Deathstrike and I've found the Manticore to be a bit hit and miss due to it's limited ammo.

I saw someone with an aircav army at the last tournament I went to but it involved having lots of infantry (five or six squads plus command squad and associated air transports) so I don't think that's a route you should take considering your comments about your back. Not a fan of flyers though so look to other for info on those.

Yeah I don't get the forgeworld thing myself but hey what can you do?

There was a Intresting air cav army at lvo this pass weekend that seem to do well I might look at that for inspiration

Most artillery army I see use the renegade guard list from forgeworld the big issue I have with this type of army is I don't see how it deals with riptides and such it has high st shots but not a lot of them

Through attrition

You just out last them while summoned units tarpit and grab objectives

You don't need to table them to win in an objectives game

Yeah summoning daemons is the part that puts me off doing the list I just find summoning so dull
