Getting starting with ADmech and skittari

Where do I begin I just got the Mechanicus codex and ordered the skittari online I picked up the getting started box and a destroyer breacher box... But I haven't decided how to paint or what type of army to go for. Can anyone help me out I want to build a competitive army but I don't know where to begin what units do I get a lot of? What do I stay away from? I know I want to make my own Mechanicus knight house I just bought two knights I want to get a third and run the adamantium lance and then run the Mechanicus with them. Again I have no idea what I'm doing and some guidance would be great lol thanks

30k and 40k ad-mech are quite different for now though it's gradually merging a bit. The Secutarii expansion for the Taghmata list in the latest HH book Inferno can apparently take some 40k Skitarii weaponry so some of the 40k range can now be used in a 30k army. The next Imperial Armour book is meant to give at least some of the 30k units for 40k too.

While the bad news is that for most stuff we won't know for some time will be usable in both settings (Not Dragoons and Ironstriders alas, the codex says they were invented post-heresy!) it does mean that you'll eventually get to have an army for both settings with some give and take. For now i'd suggest sticking to 40k as that's what you've already bought and you can expand into 30k if you have friends/locals playing it as things go.

So where do I start ? What units are "good" or disadvantages advantages etc

I mean, that is a very LARGE question. Especially if you mean to include both 40 and 30k...

What would be best is tell us which units you like and we can tell you if they go together, how to use them etc.

I'd heartily reccomend the 1D4Chan articles on the three sets of units, these provide a great overview of how everything plays with a nice easy-going style from many contributing authors (myself even in a few instances):

Skitarii

Cult Mech

30k Mechanicum

I guess the first question would be whether you play war convocation or 'regular' detachments and formations.

The convocation gives you a shopping list of models to grow a small collection and is all kinds of powerful, though also very restrictive and will be rendered invalid sooner or later when GW come after it with the nerf hammer.

The non-convocation mechanicum lack the power but allow you to play list variants that might better fit your gameplay and model preferences (for instance ironstrider heavy lists).

There is some suggestion that the next Imperial Armour will be bringing 30k units to 40k, but there is no ETA on that.

I'm speaking strictly 40k right now and what's so powerful about this convocation ?

Firstly - you only pay for the models, not the wargear. But you have to stick to a fairly specific set of units on the skitarii side where most of the free upgrades go.

It means that all of your squad leaders are pumped up with relics and weapons they wouldn't otherwise bother taking. Around 400-500 pts in a typical list almost entirely in sergeant upgrades and skitarii weapons for your two (no more, no less) units.

Secondly - it combines the the skitarii and mechanicus special per-turn rules giving the whole army a double dip on boosts each turn. And then throws a bit more on top like no gets hot for plasma weapons.

Which becomes even more horrible if you decide to also throw in a relatively cheap haemotrope reactor (which you should be able to fit what with the 500+ points of free upgrades you can potentially get)

That vanguard squad you just got free plasma caliver upgrades on? They are now firing 9 blasts a turn. Or have your unit of kataphron destroyers put out 6 large plasma blasts a turn. With neither getting hot.

Ive never actually played the war convocation but it does sound ridiculous/the way to go if you are wanting to compete against top tier lists.

You can also now add plasma servitor squads as elite choices to the mechanicus side of the convocation - 30pts per squad of 3, though they will spend half of their time mindlocked if not supported by an inquisitor or similar babysitter.

I've always found regular non-conclave prices to be a little steep. War conclave is definitely a post necron level book though, run it against something like guard and it'll be one way traffic.
