Jam Master Flex
Hello all, I'm about to paint the faces on some Sisters of Battle and was wondering about pale flesh. Has anyone tried undercoating white and using several washes of reikland fleshshade? If so did it turn out ok? Thanks in advance :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/331234-painting-pale-flesh/ Share on other sites
Stormtrooper-VII
I tried it on a dwarf once, turned out pretty well for the amount of effort I put in, but it wasn't particularly pale (from memory it ended up looking fairly tanned), only doing a single thinned down coat might have made it paler, but I couldn't say for certain since I only tried it once. WarriorFish
I have used white with Reikland Fleshshade on top, gives a very pale skin tone as you'd expect. You need to be careful about application though if you want to keep it quite pale, focus the wash in the recesses for the most part. Rakarth Flesh is also a very good base for a lighter flesh colour, works very well so unless you're after a really pale look I'd go with Rakarth and Reikland :tu: Here's a couple of examples of the Rakarth method: Hidden Content Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/331234-painting-pale-flesh/#findComment-4662501 Share on other sites
Jam Master Flex
Thanks chaps. WF that Ogryn looks good so it may work on a female sculpt. I'm going to give it a go on a couple of spare heads and see where I get. Will post pics tomorrow when I've had chance to do it :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/331234-painting-pale-flesh/#findComment-4662511 Share on other sites
Grotsmasha
Check out the Celestine video by Duncan on WarhammerTV on YouTube, he does a really good pale skin on her. Father Mehman
You could undercoat white or, if you like undercoating in black, spray it with Chaos Black (or your preferred spray / primer) and then basecoat with Rakarth Flesh. Here's a recipe for really pale - almost pallid - skin: Rakarth Flesh basecoat Reikland Fleshshade / Thinner (2:1) wash Rakarth Flesh glaze layer Rakarth Flesh / Pallid Wych Flesh (75/25) glaze layer Rakarth Flesh / Pallid Wych Flesh (50/50) glaze highlight Another recipe that I've used to great effect for pale skin: Bugman's Glow undercoat Cadian Fleshtone basecoat Bugman's Glow wash Cadian Fleshtone glaze layer Cadian Fleshtone / Rakarth Flesh (75/25) glaze layer Cadian Fleshtone / Rakarth Flesh (50/50) glaze highlight But, for what you're trying to accomplish with so little area, I'd try this: Rakarth Flesh basecoat Cadian Fleshtone glaze layer Reikland Fleshshade wash Cadian Fleshtone glaze layer Cadian Fleshtone / Rakarth Flesh (75/25) glaze highlight I paint in glazes, obviously, so that's why I say "glaze layer" or "glaze highlight". Feel free to not glaze and omit that word from the above paint recipes. The steps will be the same. On the last recipe, try diluting the Reikland Fleshshade with some thinner (Lahmian Medium or your preferred thinner) for a softer application because female skin looks better with less contrast. Probably a 2:1 mixture of Reikland Fleshshade to Lahmian Medium would suffice but it wouldn't be crazy to create a 1:1 mixture - you don't need deep shadows.
