Mellow
I’ve not read that quote from Sanguinius before but I knew it existed. If I understand correctly it means that Sanguinius had a vision of The Emperor on his throne (as in 40k) with the Chaos Gods and Tyranids “encroaching” on Him. Although a sense that The Emperors soul was in the Warp ready to be made anew? If I understand that correctly it would stand to reason he believed The Emperor had the potential to be reborn (which would also fit the older Shaman lore) but would be interesting to see how it slotted in with the perpetual lore. Although I could make a wild guess in that most perpetuals do have the ability to be reborn as is often shown. With the plot moving forwards there are splendid opportunities for the destruction of The Emperor to spin many different parts of the Imperium into total chaos. Indefragable
Yea I just finished it not too long ago myself. Suffers a bit from the perennial GW flaw (bloody blooded blood gems gripped in bloody hands by blood warriors drinking bloody mary’s in the blood red dawn) but overall the details it provided about Baal, BA, and their recruitment practices. I wish I it would have gone a bit more in depth, but lest I sound like I’m tearing it apart, I thought it was pretty good overall. I was annoyed about the final moments with his personal servant. It seemed unnecessary and—IMO—weakened his character a bit. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/331618-dante/page/3/#findComment-4895485 Share on other sites
b1soul
The scene with his man-servant was a tad vampire trope-ish...but I still thought the novel was overall very well-done HeritorA 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/331618-dante/page/3/#findComment-4895570 Share on other sites
HeritorA
Indefragable'Suffers a bit from the perennial GW flaw (bloody blooded blood gems gripped in bloody hands by blood warriors drinking bloody mary’s in the blood red dawn)' - well, that's GW. I think they will never get over it. Too much cliche. I envision doubled 'bloody blooded blood gems gripped in bloody hands by blood warriors drinking bloody mary’s in the blood red dawn' for the 'Devastation of Baal' this November :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/331618-dante/page/3/#findComment-4895742 Share on other sites
m0nolith
Finally finished it. I thoroughly enjoyed the book! I wanted a book that did a good job of describing BA philosophy and Baalite culture in fantastically written package, and that’s exactly what I got! Simply put, an excellent book. Can’t wait to see what happens in Devistationof Baal. Roomsky
Wasn't huge on this one. Having a chapter of good guy marines is fine but it renders the story generic without enough juxtaposition. The whole thing came off as a nobledark interpretation of the setting rather than a a decent chapter amongst the great Imperial -show. The recruitment stuff was interesting enough but has been done better in other works, and I find Haley's prose increasingly boring. Some of the dialogue too, especially during battle scenes, was almost comically stock military stuff. The pacing was pretty good though, and it pulled some decent subversion (The whole section with the traitor marines was well done). Probably gonna give Devastation of Baal a pass, though. MrDarth151
I found it refreshing. A lot of Grimdark elements always strike me as stupid, and having a chapter with reasonable recruitment practices instead of the usual "Let's kill several thousands supplicants per a battle brother raised" was rather nice. All and all, one of the more enjoyable reads I got out of BL in the recent years. A good character study of Dante, also. I would definitely recommend this one. Indefragable
Speaking of recruitment practices...I thought it was kind of neat how failed aspirants of all different stages--from "sorry, you're O- and we need AB+" to making it 98% of the way--become basically an auxiliary force that can actually kick ass. Nice little touch. Would love to see that aspect explored more. Oh wait...the 'Nids will explore it with their nom nom nom'ing... b1soul
Nobledark is fine in moderate helpings...one could say that's the essence of Sanguinius' sons DarkChaplain 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/331618-dante/page/3/#findComment-4925358 Share on other sites
Indefragable
Nobledark is fine in moderate helpings...one could say that's the essence of Sanguinius' sons ...right. The BA’s “thing” in many ways is being that last candle in the dark. Besides, they are fighting an inner war with their own hemoglobin, so that brings them down a notch or two. Orpheus Black Blood
I enjoyed it very much. The last bit with the vampirizing of the servant was a little weird, but i don't think it was that bad. In general good read. Will start now with Devastation of Baal. m0nolith
Listening to this book at the moment, WOW! Loved every second so far. Im a Jonathan Keeble purist, but Gareth Armstrong did an excellent job narrating it!
