Differences in silicone clay shapers

I think many people probably buy one set (whatever brand) and are then unlikely to buy more of a different type, so this may be a topic that's hard to comment on short of advising "buy one of each and see for yourself".

However, I do happen to have bought a couple of sets, so I can offer some limited advice.

The first lot I bought was a good while back, and were called Colour Shapers, and were made by Royal Sovereign. I bought a few #0 sizes in white, grey and black tips. These correspond to medium, firm, and extra-firm silicone tips respectively, and I quickly discovered that black (extra firm) were the most useful by far. I then bought more shapes, all in size #0, and all with black tips. I also quickly discovered that three shapes were the ones I used most: Flat Chisel, Cup Chisel, and Tapered Point. Cup and Angle Chisel are useful, but for most of the work I do, they see little use compared to the others - just like file shapes, some are just handier

The second lot I bought was still a while ago, but a few years after the first lot. I saw them on Amazon as a set of 5 in size #0 with black tips for a good price, and bough them for a friend. Although I think they were sold as the same thing (i.e., "Colour Shapers"), they did look to have a different name (possibly a brand called Creative?), and some of the other tool details differed a little as well. They seemed to be good quality though, and they have lasted my friend well ever since.

Now, whether the second lot was simply a slightly revised product, or if it was a competing or non-brand version designed to closely resemble the originals, I'm not sure. However, both were of equal quality from what I could tell, and had the same sort of details you would look for in a good brush - decent ferrule, handle, etc.

Therefore, if you can get them cheaply and easily enough, I would recommend getting one or two (Flat Chisel and Taper Point probably), and see what you think - even if they are not quite what you want/expect, you will still have a couple of useful tools for very small outlay.
