Australian/New Zealand PCA product options

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I am always seeing people recommend products that simply aren't available on the shelves in Aus/NZ, so I thought it might be good to get some local information sharing going.

First recommendation from me is for model stripping - Dettol, just the standard stuff available at any supermarket. I have used it on both plastic and resin with some very satisfying results. I even left a few pieces submersed over several days to ensure no damage was caused.

My first question is - What are you guys using as a matte clear-coat? I'm currently using ard-coat but the gloss doesn't work well for flesh or cloth. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Mods: if a thread like this exists (I wasn't able to find one) or this breaches board rules in any way, please melta the tread. Thanks.

Common among scale modelers.  Extremely cheap, high volume alternative through the airbrush.  Protects plenty well to weather with oils or enamels over your acrylics, then Future again before dull coating.

Haven't yet tried it for staining clear cockpit canopies, but I will some day.

Good idea man.

Regarding paint strippings the two I've used with success are methylated spirits and Simple green. Metho you can get from pretty much anywhere, it works well on plastic and metal but I wouldn't use it on resin, has a tendency to soften it. Simple green can be picked up from Bunnings. I will have to try the Dettol.

In terms of Varnishes that I've been using of late, I use Vallejo matt and gloss, also use a number of their other products like their decal softener and set. I've found that the Combat Company is really good for paints and other hobby supplies, including things like plastic card and magnets. I used to order up to Brisbane with no problems.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Hrolf - I had no idea that Bunnings did simple green. I have been looking for it for a while now because I've heard such good things about it. Will pick some up next time I go past one.

On magnets - I'll check out combat company. I've been using rare earth magnets from aussiemagnets but they are pretty pricey. Very good though.
