Word bearers and daemon allies.

Bit of a noob question so apologies in advance. Just a little confused as I'm transitioning from 40k to 30k.

I know word bearers can takes allies from the daemon codex, but is it strictly just an allied detachment? Or can they also (or instead of) take daemon formations?

Can you take daemons as a primary army in Horus heresy games? I just looked at the PDF for the nurgle utterblight. Says he's a. Penal hq in a daemon primary detachment. Trying to figure out if in normal HH games you can just take a daemons army, or just strictly as word bearer allies?

Supposedly you can using the rules in Samus' profile.

There will be a full Daemon lost with the next book it seems as that will feature signus. For no I think as long as you use the AOD foc it's fine to use the 40k book in that foc.

So where does it actually say anywhere that daemons are a playable primary detachment faction in 30k?

So just to confirm, if a word bearers force decided to use one of the lords of the ruinstorm, the only way to do it is to take one as a lord of war. That being said, if you do that then you can't have lorgar in the same army correct?

You currently cannot take them as primary no. We house rule it.

As for LoW, you can get 2 slots with an alternate force org.

Under Samus' Lord of the Ruinstorm special rule:

"If Samus is selected in an army which uses Codex: Chaos Daemons as its Primary Detachment in Age of Darkness games, Samus may be counted as a HQ choice rather than as a Lords of War choice. If this is the case, then Samus must be the army’s Warlord and has the following Warlord trait rather than rolling to determine a trait."

And then at the bottom in italics:

Samus, Daemon Prince of the Ruinstorm, may be chosen as a Lords of War choice for the following armies in Age of Darkness games: Word Bearers Legiones Astartes and Codex: Chaos Daemons (see also the Lord of the Ruinstorm special rule).

So yes, you can take daemons as a primary in 30k. Is it balanced? No, not really. Summoning and cheap units make it very hard to win

As explained above, Daemons are fine to use in Age of Darkness under certain restrictions:

- Word Bearers can field them as Allies through the "Dark Brethren" Rite of War, and by taking Zardu Layak, Erebus or Kor Phaeron as your Warlord.

- Imperialis Militia & Cults armies with the "Tainted Flesh" or "Cult Horde" Provenance can also field them as Allies.

- finally, Cor'bax Utterblight & Samus allow Daemons to be fielded as a Primary Detachment, but note that they both have "Experimental Rules" at this stage. Should be fine for most people, provided you don't play too waac.

Just to add, that in the cultists book it also says you can take cultists as allies for a Daemon army. There is no mention of having to use a special character for this. Which again backs up the fact you can use them in 30K and do not need the special characters.

I have started using them and as mentioned they suffer with easy to kill units and summoning can be seen as just feeding your opponent when playing kill point missions.

I think the biggest thing we are trying to work out at the moment in our group is if the expansions are also included (eg WD rules like D thirster and  Be'lakor, plus expension books like Curse of the Wulfen and the Magnus book) As these came out after the rules stating 'Codex: Daemons' are they seen as part of the Codex or not.

Interesting side note, when you summon Daemons you can use the Khorne Daemonkin rules (including Blood Tithe) with summoned units.

Really, how does that work. I thought if you summon you just get the basic units from the codex

The Age of Darkness rules just mention the Chaos Daemons codex, not the Daemonkin one, so I think that would be a hard sell to your opponent. Particularly since the Daemonkin ones are so much better (Fearless instead of Daemonic instability plus Blood Tithe).
