Mini Photography Studio/Light Box

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've always had issues with getting decent lighting and backdrops when I take miniatures, which results in me always taking sub-standard photographs of my miniatures.

Whilst searching a way to improve my miniature photography skills I came across this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Photography-Portable-Soft-Tent-Light-Box-Mini-Tripod-Light-Backdrop-Softbox-Kit-/262671802793?hash=item3d2875a1a9:g:yYMAAOxyf1dTJ-Og

I was just wondering if anybody had used anything similar? Obviously I can't fit a whole army in that but it looks big enough to fit a unit, or a land raider sized tank or similar.

For £20 its pretty cheap but would just like to know if anybody has any experience using something like this before I go and buy it?

Cheers, James

Light boxes are awesome for mini-photography, I've made my own boxes using plastic bins, lamps and parchment paper, though eventually I did switch to black suede and Matte White for different effect. The linked kit does make for an easy and simple set up (which is worth it's weight in gold really) though I'd probably suggest a few more lamps to make a sort of 5 light set up. I'd probably also add a few different temperature bulbs, the 3200K packed in are nice and all, but I'd also add in a few 5000K+ and maybe a 2700K to play around with. As for the camera mount, I can't speak much to that design, but if it's stable and you can use a count down timer to take the photos it should be rather functional.

Wulox,

Avoid that product.  It's really not very good.  The lights get rally hot and aren't as bright as they should be and the tent is laughable.  I got one of these and was disappointed.  I bought a Foldio and I've been very pleased (but I mislaid the backdrops).  Foldio is a bit smaller though - the Foldio 2 is better for anything larger than a 5-man squad.

I second Ulfgrim, those lights are horrible. In addition to the heat, if they are too close to the tent for too long they'll melt it. LED lights are the way to go for miniatures. The ones I have aren't available anymore, but these are the lights I use for my lighting setups:

Even Chinese knock offs of these kinds of LED lights aren't bad either, but the electronics inside can go sideways pretty quick - ie knobs that stop working, flickering, etc etc
