Molotow Liquid Chrome Markers

Recommended Posts

Started putting this through the airbrush and I'm never looking back. There's been a few people who've been doing YouTube vids of the same but I haven't seen any who have been putting it on 40k minis.

For airbrush users. Get the 30ml refill bottle of Molotow Liquid Chrome, it runs around 25.00 - 30.00 msrp and can go the distance. So far I've painted over 40 miniatures with it and have only used 1/3 of the contents. No need for thinning, I was using it directly into a grav fed cup on a Badger 105 @ 15 psi, apply a bit more than you'd think, it's alcohol based so it'll eavporate and sharpen up. Not applying enough paint will result in a "sandy" look but will go away with another application. No special chems for clean up, I used Iwata airbrush cleaner and ran it through like normal.

Just as with the pens, let it dry in a dust free environment for at least a day before even thinking of touching it. Once it cures you can handle like normal and can apply a gloss coat such as vallejo to seal but I think it's not necessary unless you are constantly handling your miniatures. Which may happen because anyone who sees stuff like this is drawn to it like a moth to flame.

Here's some new work for my most recent army addition - my Order of the Argent Shroud "The Rage of Silvana"

I've only used the pen as a paint pen, but what I've found:

Washes seem to go fine over it and basically act as though you washed over silver. I've used ink washes and GW shades or whatever they're called, and both worked fine.

Pure artists ink was used as well (space wolf power sword, used yellow ink to make the runes pop), and didn't seem to have any problems, it seems to have dried as I expected.

I also used Cassandora Yellow to turn it into vibrant gold with some Emperor's Children, and it came out juusssst a teeny bit shinier than the same over standard silver paint.

Basically, nothing I've tried has failed, but pretty much anything layered over it robbed it of most of its vibrance, at least in my experience. I'd be interested to know if anyone has come up with a way to tint it and have it retain its shine.

You could try clear paints perhaps? Depending on how strong you want them you'll need to thin them down a bit but they should keep the chrome looking shiny. Really though, anything over the top of chrome is going to dull it a little bit- AFAIK premade things that use "coloured" chrome actually tint the chrome itself rather than using a clearcoat (either that or they use special factory paint that you'll never find anywhere).

I /think/ the issue is that once you add another layer, the surface medium is what's mostly going to define the shine. Closest I could get to recreate was hitting it up with a clear gloss coat after tinting, and even then it's more glossy than reflective. Now, I haven't tried using thinned artists inks, as they should have very little medium in them. May need to try that once I've slept.

I'm powering through this sisters of battle army so fast with this stuff I felt almost guilty for a second before squealing with delight that I'll have 1,000 points painted in less than a month.

"Ahem."

Yes I'll get back to you guys in just a minute. Sisters need to purge to ya know.

Sorry to necrobump this ancient thread, but I've experimented with airbrushing the stuff. It's gorgeous to work with, though I find a small amount of Mr. Thinner does help. Here's two (very poorly taken) photos of it on a model piece.
