gmaleron
Hello everyone, once again I am debating jumping into Horus heresy with the two Legions in particular I'm trying to decide between being Salamanders or Night Lords. Regardless of which one I pick it will most definitely be a drop pod Army as I love the Thematic idea of drop pods streaking through the atmosphere and impacting on the ground disgorging their cargo of death whether it be fire or lightning. Due to the high number of Traitor armies at my store I'm currently leading towards the Salamanders, this is the first attempt at this list in a long time so let me know what you think and thanks for your feedback! HQ: -Praetor *w/ Artificer Armor, Paragon Blade, Drake Mantle, Dragonscale Storm Shield, Melta Bombs TROOPS: -x5 Support Squad **Praetor Here** *w/ Flamers, Sgt with Artificer Armor -Drop Pod -x5 Support Squad *w/ Melta Guns, Sgt with Artificer Armor -Drop Pod -x5 Support Squad *w/ Melta Guns, Sgt with Artificer Armor -Drop Pod -x10 Tactical Marines *w/ Sgt with Artificer Armor, Combi Flamer -Drop Pod -x10 Tactical Marines *w/ Sgt with Artificer Armor, Combi Flamer -Drop Pod -x10 Tactical Marines *w/ Sgt with Artificer Armor, Combi Flamer -Drop Pod HEAVY SUPPORT: -x10 Pyroclasts -Dreadclaw Drop Pod -x10 Pyroclasts -Dreadclaw Drop Pod -x10 Pyroclasts -Dreadclaw Drop Pod TOTAL ARMY: 2500 POINTS Tactics: - Depending on my opponent ideally I will be dropping down all three of my Pyroclast squads with either a combination of tactical squads or support squads with melta guns to pop transports and then Flame the occupants. Lord Asvaldir
Unfortunately I think this list just really isn't going to work, too lacking in anti tank since you can't rely on melta in the armored ceramite world of 30k. Plus you also have far too many pyroclasts, they are a mediocre unit that really can't be effectively spammed. I'd stick to one pyroclast unit, and also drop down to two tactical squads and then you'll have the pts for the better anti tank options you need. A few example that work in a drop pod list are lightnings with kraken missiles, leviathan dreadnoughts with melta lance/siege drill, javelin land speeders, machine killer combi melta veterans and contemptor dreadnoughts with 2 fists and 2 inbuilt graviton guns. The other issue with the list is you have nothing on the table turn one, so you'll auto lose if you don't go first. To remedy that I'd recommend taking a jetbike unit, which is very survivable and easy to hide so you don't auto lose turn one. Also a note about drop pod lists, Night Lords do drop pod lists a lot better than Salamanders. The NL unique RoW terror assault lets your terror squads and veterans take drop pods, but still let's you take ground based options like tanks, so it's not as restrictive as Orbital Assault. You are forced into only one heavy support slot, but that's pretty easy to work around. Drop Pods come in Turn 1 still if I go second, its game turn not player turn. Varyn
I'd swap out some pyroclasts for a leviathan/contemptor dreadnought in a pod. Also the flamer unit isn't ideal for your praetor to join, he's getting towards 200 points so you'll want him to be in melee as much as possible, whereas the flamers want to be toasting stuff, not in assault. Also you don't really have a "scary" unit that's going to drop in and make your opponent rethink their strategy. I think I'd drop at least 1 unit of pyroclasts and 1 tactical squad, swap out the melta units for machine killer vets. Just my suggestions :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/332219-rain-of-fire-salamanders-25k-drop-pods/#findComment-4691761 Share on other sites

It was only first game turn when FW says it was in book 5 or 6, forget which, but they retracted on that rule and went back to the standard 40k rule that you lose if you don't have any units on the table at the start of your player turn. Angmarred
I'm fairly certain in 30k if you have nothing at any point you lose Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/332219-rain-of-fire-salamanders-25k-drop-pods/#findComment-4692318 Share on other sites
foamy248
Yeah, think about adding a leviathan or maybe some rapiers. Are you using a ROW? I can't see one, but there is a drop-pod specific one. Additionally, you can't go wrong with Firedrakes (which would be especially hilarious being drop podded into enemy lines...).
