SW 3000 pts - Circling the Square V2.0

Alright folks, since it turned out that Javelins do not get rerolling the outflank side for not having LA (SW) I had to think my SW list back, and eventually came out with two plausible variants :D Please let me know which list you prefer, feedback are appreciated! ;)

Again, I'm not trying to reproduce any famous SW deployment, just trying to come out with decent SW gaming lists that do not suffer the 'skeleton syndrome' ;) And anyway, all of this could totally change soon with 40k new edition :P

I think both lists look pretty solid, but why are you going with combi-grenade launchers for your vets? Do you have a lot of xenos or Imperial militia/Solar Auxilia in your meta? I've never liked grenade launchers (I have a Guard army, so I'm familiar with the ability to spam them) as I find them to ineffective in either mode. I think you'd get much more mileage out of one round of plasma fire or melta fire than one round of (4) S3/AP6 blasts or S6/AP4 shots. In general it seems like you've got good, hard-hitting mobile units, which is always ideal. Although I do wonder if you might want to exchange the occasional power axe for a power sword just you can kill off a couple power armored models at I4 rather than I1. Let us know if you get any games in with it and how it goes!

Hi Vlth, thanks for feedback!

I think both lists look pretty solid, but why are you going with combi-grenade launchers for your vets? Do you have a lot of xenos or Imperial militia/Solar Auxilia in your meta? Not Militia/Auxilia, but a fair number of Mech armies, against which it seems that sniper blast/template weapons work fine in placing wounds ;) Obviously I've still to try this Vets loadout, since our 1-month old rules finally stated that we are the best at outflanking (and if the setting won't reveal itself to be good, I'll definitely drop it out for some other weapons) :D

Actually I was wondering the same, and also reasoning on mauls due to the presence of Mech in the meta (of course mauls are good only against other bikes in the case of Marines, but still...) ;) Swords will be for sure a presence in the Slayer squads as additional pwr weapons to go on PFs' side, for other units it feels to me like... magnets incoming! :D

Personally, I'll go with the 2nd list beforehand, since for the "rule of cool" 3 TL outflanks and 1 plane sound better than 2 & 2 :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Alright, since as other Wolf brothers made me notice spending 500+ pts on scouting Thallax isn't a great deal for 12 shots and some walking wounds, I brainstormed again on the Pale Hunters list, and eventually came out with this new version:

TROOPS

- 10 Slayers (vexilla, 2 axes, sarge w/ AA & GFB) 170

- 10 Slayers (same equips) 170

- 8 Supports (plasmaguns) 265

DEDICATED TRANSPORTS

- Rhino 35

- Rhino 35

- Rhino 35

- Spartan (TLHF, DB, ceramite, shield) 375

The basic idea is the same as before (3 scouting units + 1 plane), with Praetor + Tech + Apothecary in Outriders, SotD in Termies on Spartan (FEARLESS FNP TERMIES!!!) and Support on Proteus. Reserves at TL 2+, TL sides :D

Any thoughts or comments? Any feedback welcome! ;)

Those Termies outperform a Deathsworn command squad for the Speaker instead?

Well, I have actually spent today thinking to the replacement and have tried to come up with a list featuring 9 Deathsworn + Speaker on Phobos for nasty assault, but at the moment all I have obtained was to roll back on the list with Termies :P

Overall, there are some issues to me in including Deathsworn in place of Termies:

1) they currently don't have the models, nor did FW release a leak about them being prepared yet (I recall that at the Inferno Open Day they showed *a massive lot* of TS dedicated stuff and only the SW Contemptor for the 6th Legion), hence nobody knows anything about when they will be released and I would neither prox them nor build substitutes - just a problem of mine anyway;

2) the lack of Implacable Advance was what stopped me from actually taking them - since I was listing two minimal naked troops, an "autokill" squad and only one decently equipped scoring unit, I was looking for something resistant to eventually capture objectives and the obvious choice were the Termies;

3) even if I try to replace Termies with Deathsworn, I end up the list with 50 to 100 pts free with which almost nothing fits, being a lot of units negated by RoW limitations.

I will prosecute the brainstorming about Deathsworn anyway, maybe eventually I'll find a decent solution to fit them ;) Thanks for the suggestion anyway! ;)

Personally I think the no implacable advance is only the final nail in the coffin. They've got some nifty special rules I'll give them that but they seem to squishy and they exist purely to kill. Terminators while great at killing to are much more survivable aren't more expensive (though same size transport is), can have any number of characters with them not just speakers and yeah they score which is a thing that males terminators really shine in 30k vs 40k as they are one of the only scoring units outside of the troop section.

Apart from the "Deathsworn in/out" argument, here it comes a variant with Hvarl "Mr Autoinclude" Red-Blade tongue.png
