Beaky Heads on Scouts?

Recommended Posts

Im considering converting the Armageddon box's scouts into legion Recon units and cant seem to find an example of a scout wearing a Mk6 helmet online anywhere but surely someone has done it before? :D Mk7s look too big a lot of the time but sometimes seem to fit alright so im conflicted... Bonus points if its the Ravenguard FW Mk6's :)

Honestly, I've rarely seen power armour scaled heads look good on scouts. Even a lot of the bare heads look too big. Due to the extra length bestowed by the mk. VI 'beak', I can only think this issue would be exacerbated by using those heads. Maybe it would work if you sourced some Rogue Trader era helms as they'd be smaller.

As far as I'm aware Legion Recon units still wore power armour.

The scout minis wear carapace armour, if you try fitting any marine heads they look a little too large.

But best of luck!

They come with PA as standard but you can change it for recon armour which is carapace armour. You loose out on the sav but get additional bonus rules.

I've seen it before. It looked a bit wonky to be honest. As others have pointed out marine helmets look a little strange on the scouts. Something I've seen that looked really good, was victoria miniatures heads on them. It looked amazing, and really brought character to the models. If you swap the legs for scion legs it helps their pose a bit as well. I'm planning on doing just this for my recon squads, if I don't use pa.

I think I'm in the minority here but I really don't think any other GW unit helmets really match the scouts. I really haven't bought into any of the alternative companies' heads on scouts either, I think none I've seen so far capture the right look for the scouts. They all look too Halo or too Star Wars to me if that makes any sense?

I see their armor as like a downgrade of the traditional SM wargear so I find that when converted well the normal SM helmets look best. The best tip I could give is to cut the bottom of any SM helms you use off so that they sit a bit lower. If possible I'd try shaving down the back a bit too since it is hidden by the neck guard in the back.

I know there are few immediate sources online of good conversions for this but believe me it is possible. You could also cut the beakies at the sides to make a more angular knight looking helm to help with the protrusion of the beakies.

A really cool thing my father used to do was cut the bottom knob off of beaky helmets and glue them on the back or thigh plates of scouts to make it look like they've fastened it to their harness but have it on hand.

Either way, go with whatever you like best and if you find a good conversion I'd appreciate if you shared it as I am also currently looking at options for scout heads.

Well, the last part of becoming a Space Marine is the implantation of the Black Carapace, which allows them to interface directly with their power armour.

Scouts are still not at that stage, which is the main reason that they wear carapace armour instead. Aside from the obvious exceptions (Space Wolf Scouts and HH Legion Recon units, which are both full Marines in stripped-down or lighter armour), this is the main reason I think that power armour helmets on Scouts looks odd; because that would require power and/or some form of interface for the helmet's autosenses to function. It's also why the official plastic Scout models wear headsets.

As a long-time player of the game, I generally like the old-style un-helmeted heads for my scouts. For those with camo cloaks, hooded heads work well. For stealthier chapters, or for Scouts operating in very cold climates, heads with balaclavas or similar works well. For most though, I generally prefer heads with a Mohawk to give them that "raw recruit" look.

Whilst plenty of third-party suppliers make suitable offerings, I would like to suggest having a look at Mad Robot's offerings. I got their Mohawk bare heads, and they fit the scouts really well.

@ Noserenda:

Since you are looking at making HH Legion Recon units from your scouts though, I might suggest a bit more! I would replace the scout lower legs with the knees and lower legs of power-armoured models, and possibly replace the scout torso with a power-armoured one too. That way, the power armoured helmet won't look so out of place, and the unarmoured upper legs and arms helps to convey the stripped-down power armour look (and which justifies the save being reduced to 4+).

I would also recommend not using the regular power armour backpacks, as these are too distinctive. Instead, I would add some fairly chunky-looking backpacks to the models (with the assumption being that there is a power source in there somewhere that provides for the basic armour functions). Alternatively, cut down the regular SM backpack, and add on lots of pouches and such to change its silhouette.

In fact, as you're only using the upper scout legs (and you can get unarmoured heads and arms anywhere), you might want to consider using cheaper legs like those in the various Catachan kits instead.

Examples off the internet for similar things here, here, and here.

Edit: bloody spelling...

Ooooh thanks for all the Suggestions Frater, id given the thread up for dead :D But ive gone for Elysian heads in the end, cant justify a Forgeworld splurge without knowing the results ahead of time unfortunately. Id be tempted by the torso conversions if i ever do any 40k scouts again though.

And yeah ive done a LOT of headswaps for my Operatives over the years, something like 60 unique bare heads/open lids? But was definitely looking at Helmets this time :)

So keen to get my box next week!
