Vash
Hello, Long time WH40k player and focuses mostly on the Inquisition armies since 3rd edition. Mainly Witch Hunters from 3rd edition. Been looking far and wide for alternative models for Sisters of Battle. The current ones are good enough, but feels a bit behind compared to other armies new models. Also, looking for new rules for our Sisters, but thats something GW has to make for us. Rules are "fine" just need som formations/detachments to compete a bit better. Anyhow, I decided to paint my Sisters of Battle in the classical Our Martyred Lady color scheme. Black isn't my strong color to paint, but I won't get any better unless I practice and actually try it out. While its not shown in the picture, the armour is not pure black. Its actually grey with one layer of pure Nuln Oil and one layer mixed with Nuln Oil and Lamia medium. More to come. I'll complete one of my Dominion squads first, then work my way through various squads. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Sisters%20of%20Battle/First%20War%20maiden%20done.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/332414-our-martyred-lady-painting-log-vash/ Share on other sites
Atrus
That there, is a nice looking model. I myself would never have thought to go grey with washes and mixes- though I am a person of much simpler tastes (black is black). Perfect practice makes perfect. Looking forward to seeing a full squad painted to this standard ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/332414-our-martyred-lady-painting-log-vash/#findComment-4695709 Share on other sites
Vash
Thanks mate. Looking forward to get one unit completed to see what it looks like. I am with you on the point that black is black. But when I high lighted black (on my deathwatch) the high lights popped out to much. Nothing wrong with that, but I wanted a cleaner style. Commander Dawnstar
Can I ask which grey you used? I've tried grey-as-black like that before and it's never really hit the mark for me, but what you've done there certainly looks to have worked out. Here is how I did it. In real life it looks better. 1. Primer (black) 2. Dark Reaper (in the words of Duncan "Two thin coats") 3. Nuln Oil (let it dry completely) 4. Nuln oil + lamia medium (50/50 mix) The last step will initially leave the model to appear very blue/grey but as the paint dries up, the model darkens. So be patient with this step. Let it fully dry before adding a third layer if you think its to "grey". Commander Dawnstar
Ah, okay. I wouldn't have thought of using Dark Reaper for that. When I gave that sort of thing a try I hovered more around Mechanicus Standard and Eshin. Thanks; I'll have to give that a try sometime. Vash
yah, the models are great. If you do invest in them, I don't think you will regret it. And I do think that these will be of higher quality even when GW does release plastic sisters due to the casting technique. Resin can attain a much higher level of detail than the normal plastic counterpart at the moment. I am comparing the Resin Canoness Veridian to these "War Maidens". And even with Veridian (resin model) the details are still better on the War Maidens. Also, Veridian is taller than a standard marine. Anyhow, I am super happy with these models as Sisters of Battle. Red_Shift
Could you do a side by side with veridyan? I'd be interested to compare the proportions! Btw did you add the melta or does the kit come with it? Btw did you add the melta or does the kit come with it? I can add her tomorrow if I find time for it. I'll have a space marine, and a "War Maiden" next to her. The meltagun comes with the set you buy. They are a bit smaller than space marine meltaguns I believe, to suit the model better. On another not, I got a unit up and running. Ready for battle... though without their transport. But the unit is complete :D I do apologise for the picture quality. It is night time here and my light sources are non existing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Sisters%20of%20Battle/Dominions%201.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/332414-our-martyred-lady-painting-log-vash/#findComment-4696941 Share on other sites
Atrus
Mmm that is some hotness right there. Are these War Maiden miniatures? I'm not up with the alternatives these days. Btw did you add the melta or does the kit come with it? Here you go mate. A comparison between the Space Marine, Veridian and the War maiden. Veridian is slightly taller than the Marine, oddly not shown in the picture. But its perhaps only 1mm taller. Though the War maidens are notably smaller. Next to a Space Marine this size feels correct, but next to Veridian, they feel really off scale. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Sisters%20of%20Battle/Size%20comparison.jpg Where might one acquire this wonderful range? These are from Grishnak, a russian manufacturer. You can email him on grishnak.models@gmail.com. You have to pay upfront, and there is no real security (except paypal). The shipping is around 2 weeks. So, if you are comfortable with long waiting time and a trusting person go for it Some other users form this forum has ordered from him, and spikeybits (blog or what ever that site is) has order from him too. *edit The Space Marine and Veridian are painted with Games Workshop metallic paints, while the War Maiden is painted with Vallejo Liquid Metal paint. The shine on the War maiden is toned down with nun oil though, but the result, in my opinion, is much better with the Vallejo liquid. It covers directly and flows really nicely. Beams
The war maidens look like they are in a realistic 28mm vs the GW Adepta Sororitas which are in a heroic 28mm scale. The difference being heads, hands, guns etc are larger and are less depictions of guns etc than the idea of guns etc. Personally I enjoy the more cartoony heroic, since i feel they tend to have more character, but it's really whatever soaks your goat. Thats very true. Heads, hands and guns are smaller. Though I am not really with you on the "have more character" part. But what really makes me preferring these over GWs metallic ones, is the high level of details. And of course... it actually looks like they could fit 10 Battle sisters in a Rhino :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/332414-our-martyred-lady-painting-log-vash/#findComment-4697562 Share on other sites
Red_Shift
Thanks, based on your awesome work I've ordered some grishnak models, there is part of my brain that says the moment I order them plastic sisters will be released so I may have jumped the shark! Vash
Thanks, based on your awesome work I've ordered some grishnak models, there is part of my brain that says the moment I order them plastic sisters will be released so I may have jumped the shark! You know. I have that aching feeling too. But I am confident that these models will be of higher detail/quality so I won't be disappointed in the end. Once you get your War Maidens and have a close look at them you will know what I mean. You will also notice it is very easy to paint them, as they are smaller (less big open areas) and details are easy to paint with simple techniques. Shades flows. I let into the right places and so on.
