8th Legion Terror Assault - 1500 points

Recommended Posts

This is my first attempt at an 8th Legion Terror Assault List and would appreciate any input. I've tried to keep it both fluffy and competitive. The basic tactics are;

Sevatar joins the Legion Terminators (Atramentar stand in) in the Storm Eagle. Delivered where they can do the most damage in a favourable match up - I'm not going to be throwing them against another elite close combat unit. Hellstrikes on the Storm Eagle providing anti-AT before hunting infantry with the rest of its armaments.

Fire Raptor is a dedicated AT hunter using speed and maneuverability to target rear and side armour.

Terror Squads Infiltrate or Outflank to threaten enemy infantry. Blast them with their Volkites to reduce their numbers below eight the charge and take advantage of "A talent for murder". Or securing objectives.

First of all, you need to max out those terror squads with bodies and Volkites, they become a real menace with their full squad size plus it does help with ATFM.

second, you are going to need some support for your terror squads for T1. I would recommend a contemptor in a DP so it can support your weak squads from T1

You'll need something to help with your reserve rolls too, maybe a command rhino sitting in the back? Having the reserve roll curse is the most frustrating thing in the game.

The storm eagle is incredibly lackluster for assault units since you are stuck not being able to assault until turn 3 at the earliest. Especially since Night Lords are one of two legions that have access to teleporter transponders in any list, I would highly recommend using those. Drop all the lightning claws, take combi plasma weapons instead so that when your terminators deep strike in they can unleash some pain. Also just in general, terminators really should be equipped all with ap2 weapons for assaults. All fists is ideal, but axes will do fine if you don't have the pts.

Now if you take a deep striking terminator unit, that means no Sevetar. Now granted he's fun to use, but in a low pts value terror assault list he's incredibly difficult to fit in, since he can't join any terror squads you are locked into taking an expensive transport for him and his unit. Instead take a preator or delegatus in terminator armor to unlock the rite, then deep strike in with the terminators. Now at higher pts values you can afford a land raider/spartan for Sevetar and his retinue to ride in, but fifteen hundred pts is incredibly low for 30k so I think you'll have to make do without Sevetar.

One last thing, as Skarabrand suggested a dreadnought dropping in turn one is very effective in terror assault. If you drop the storm eagle, you'll have the pts for a dual fist contemptor or cortus contemptor with 2 inbuilt graviton guns, which is a solid anti tank option. I also completely agree, 4 volkite chargers per unit isn't going to cut it, they all need chargers. I know pts are tight, so what you could do is 2 units of 8 or so all with volkites, and one somewhat wasted squad of five without volkite.  Of course if you have the pts take volkite on everything.

Like it has been suggested I'd try to buff up your Terror Squads. Maybe get an apothecary or two as well.

You're not exactly making use of either Sevatars warlord trait, not his Master of the Atramentar special rule. I'd suggest ditching him for a Delegatus with gear of your choice.

Swap the Eagle for a Contemptor in a pod.

That list looks much better. Solid base of terror squads with fire support from the fire raptor and anti tank from the dreadnought works well. The one problem is the delegatus is deep striking all on his own now, so he'll be a really easy target to snipe soon as he pops up. He needs a terminator escort. If you reduce one terror squad to 5 strong, take AC off the fire raptor and reduce the contemptor dreadnought down to a cortus, you might have enough pts for a terminator unit. If you don't, you can always take a terminator command squad unit consisting of just 3 terminators. Not ideal, but it sure beats having no escort for the delegatus.

Also one small note, I love chainglaives but they really don't work on most HQs, need an axe or fist for ap2.

In this list I'm not entirely sure how to run the Praetor. He lacks a transport or other mobility options.

In this list the Praetor gains a jump pack for increased mobility (fluffy I think) and a master crafted weapon. The down side is that he loses his trophies of judgement - not such a big deal as all the terror squads cause fear - and the Headsman in the Terror squads lose their artificer armour.

Yeah that's the problem with playing terror assault at 1500pts, since the base requirement of terror squads is so expensive the list doesn't really shine till you reach 2000-2500pts. You could run the preator with the jump pack, hide him somewhere and hope he'll be able to join up with a terror squad before he gets sniped, but a far safer option would be to find room for a small terminator squad to escort a deep striking terminator unit. You could also take a base 10 man assault marine unit as an escort to the preator, but you don't really need more anti infantry in this list, and terminators with combi plasma and a chainfist or two can at least hurt vehicles.

Also because you're short on pts, I wouldn't take a preator at all. Settle for a delegatus and save pts.
