Sons of Horus green?

Recommended Posts

Hey all.  I've been trying to paint the Sons of Horus color scheme, but I can't seem to replicate it.  I was told to try this technique:

Base - Mechanicus Standard Grey

Highlight - Dawnstone

Wash - Coelia Greenshade

Instead of getting that awesome light seafoam green color, I just get a green tinged grey.  What am I doing wrong?

This question wil never have the 'right' answer I'm afraid. I tried that grey base with green wash a few years back before I started my own Sons and to be honest, it looked like muck.

If you are after an easy to replicate colour scheme maybe just go with the FW greens, they work well for airbrushing since one is significantly lighter. Otherwise, if you are like me and like the teal/lighter seafoam look then I can give you a run down of my scheme.

I use my own recipe which involves a few mixes but gets good results, but the FW greens (Lupercal Green & Sons of Horus green) are apparently quite nice. There's no right or wrong recipe though, and the Sons of Horus green changes over the course of the Heresy (becoming murkier and darker as they get more evil, basically) so aim for something you like the look of.

In general, I'd start with a dark green and build up from there, not from a grey - that green washed grey will get you the older Index Astartes look (where the SoH were essentially green tinged grey rather than their current incarnation).

Are you shooting for a greenish grey? You'd likely have to build that up in layers, and there might be some people that achieved it. I've had much more success with the darker green, and honestly, I prefer it.

If you want to achieve a light bluish grey green, I'd recommend airbrushing and using FW's SoH green.

Shameless plug time, this is leaning toward the darker, Lupercal Green:

Part of this is due to the lighting, but this is using more of the lighter, SoH Green:

There was someone on here a while ago that did some SoH models and IIRC he said he mixed the two FW SoH greens together 50/50 for the basecoat, used the lighter one for highlights and the darker one for shadows and it looked amazing.

The 'green wash over grey'-method can look pretty sweet, and the SoH army done that way by Duncan Rhodes in WD a few years ago was one of the things that steered me towards the SoH. The problem though, was that I couldn't get consistent results with that method so I had to abandon it. While trying to salvage one failed tester I gave Vallejo US Dark Green a try, and thought the result was pretty nice in the end.

Not exactly the FW-scheme, but it works for me. My guys aren't part of the main Legion fleet so the way I see it they just used the type of green they had the most of when they got the news of their new name, and the fact that they had to repaint their armour.
