Deathwatch and Shadow Wars

So how many of you are gong to try to get into Shadow Wars with your Deathwatch?

I know the other factions not in the box have free rules posted so we don know exactly how Marines will play out.

One thing I noticed right away is that GW posted SW prepackaged selections for factions and I noticed one of the marine boxes includes Deathwatch which are advertised as 'specialists'.

So this got me to thinking, aside from the odd scout, why not just do a full SW Deathwatch army? Is anyone planning on doing this?

I'm not sure yet how I'm going to incorporate my DW into Shadow Wars, outside of the spec ops guy.  You could use them like counts as Chaos Marines, with marks being personal equipment upgrades, but what would the cultists be, menials and servitor-esque helpers?  Maybe they could be Inquisitorial agents?

It'll involve a bit of proxying, but I can make it work fluff-wise.

I have a small kill team of veterans with stalker bolters and shotguns that can count as Scouts. I suppose we can call them Initiates in that they are sent to be retrained from square one and will utilize the Scout tactics. In terms of looks and easy distinguishing, the Initiates will be wearing the Mark VII armor while the actual Deathwatch Veterans will be distinguished by wearing the Mark VIII version (the ones with collars).

I just caught a glimpse of the Specialist rules for SM.

So I can see taking some scouts, and incorporating some of my Deathwatch. Shotguns, 'silencer' bolters (think of our sniper guns), mauls and Shields are all legal.

I don't know how many specialists you can take into a game. I know you can trade in a Promethium cache for one specialist for a game.

I'd like to use Artemis or something to 'proxy' a Space Marine leader.

If you want to get fancy, there is also an Apothecary specialist. As long as he's WYSIWYG I don't know why you couldn't paint him up Deathwatch (although in 40K of course you couldn't use him unless he was 'counts as' space marines or something.)

I always wanted to have an Apothecary within my ranks anyway. In 40k he may not have Feel no Pain, but damn will he be a nice addition.

Will me saying that DW got middle finger from GW (once again) get this thread locked, like last one was? whistling.gif

Anyway, there is only one way to play fluffy DW in Shadow Wars for now - say 'screw it' and use GK rules instead. You get small, elite SM kill team with good shooting, psybolt ammo upgrade is good stand in for a lot of DW special ammo, psycannon counts as frag cannon, incinerator = DW heavy flamer. Even the fact all DW minis come with power swords is good for once, as GK rules let you just that. Just model your kill team leader as DW librarian and we're good to go.

Games Workshop has already stated that they'll likely expand the Shadow War to include more factions.  Hopefully Deathwatch will be among them.  If not I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to make a list yourself.  I'd use the Grey Knights as a good starting point.

I rather like the idea that Deathwatch are a bit too... high level?

Like in Inquisitor where having even one really makes everything else a bit redundant. No real scope for "advancement" beyond equipment.

In that respect, I'd still love to see rules for them - but *appropriate* to their level. (Same goes for Grey Knights. I mean, really. A lone DW vet is one thing...)

But Grey Knights are high level too. They are a playable faction on to themselves.

I took Grey Knights to the GW campaign and lost my first game. In the back of my mind I keep getting more frustrated with GWs treatment of Deathwatch.

Spending promethium to use my chapter for one game flat out stinks.

Oddly enough I just played months of a video game called 'Deathwatch ' where you make a kill team and kill tyranids. It's ironic.

So I'm probably swithching over I'm in a few campaigns already. But I may go with my Ultramarines so I can simultaneously build my Ultramarines while using Deathwatch.

I just hope this relegation to a side bar doesn't mean going forward we are largely bypassed in stuff like this.

All might not be lost for the DW since the Warhammer Community page announced there will be an Inquisition and Sisters of Battle kill team added to Shadow War so you might get some Deathwatch in the Inquisition team (hopefully!)

I really think we should take our cause to the Facebook page again. There's a good chance we'll be left out of it if we don't.

I already did. Didn't try to be pushy but a gentle reminder that we're still hurting from that FAQ and would like to get more use out of my DW models.

On a related note: I've gotten more confident with chopping up minis and putting them back together, so I got another box and made some pretty cool poses for my Chaos (DW) team. Those Chapter Upgrade sets have some pretty neat shoulder pads in them.

I did the same. Good to know someone else is nudging them towards the 'right decision'. ;)

Just as a side note I did finish my Shadow Wars terrain and posted it with some Deathwatch on it:

Eventually we're going to get around to developing rules for the Deathwatch as part of this project. I have a nagging feeling it's going to combine something that looks a lot like non-psyker Grey Knights with whatever "Chapter Tactics" (or whatever) we develop as part of the linked topic.

I am considering just using my Grey Knight rules for straight up deathwatch. I just have too many projects going.

But it would work: A Watchmaster is a great stand in for a Grey Knight Leader: Stave + Bolter (it's pretty much WYSIWYG on the Watchmaster)

Then a Frag Cannon counts as Psycannon, and a IHB as a Psiclencer. The various assault weapons are easy enough to do. It's quite possible.

Here's my current Grey Knight team but it came to me as I was making this project it would be very doable for Deathwatch: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/333028-prots-grey-knight-shadow-war-stuff/?p=4712968

The two problems I had with GK was that 1) they lack some of the equipment I wanted and 2) the extra cost of being a psyker. Though they do seem like a pretty good deal -- Justicar gets 2 psychic powers + a storm bolter over the chaos champ for only 25 points.

Ultimately, I think the Chaos list works better for me though. MoT gunner with a kitted out bolter + camo cloak gives me a cool RG sniper. MoK champ with the Champion of Chaos rule can feel like a blackshield if you squint. Having those storm bolters would be awfully nice though...

No. There's special Ops available to Marines that are Deathwatch but that's it.

I went to their Facebook and asked them to add them in an upcoming release. I'd advise the same thing if you want a chance at seeing them as a playable faction in Shadow Wars.
