Imperium Secundus novels

Hey there,

I'm currently reading Imperium Secundus by Dan and I have to admit that this is the first one from him, which caught me in a while.

Though I've heard all kind of opinions about the story arc in general and certain books, I wanted to ask which novels are part of the IS arc.

As far as I'm remembering:

Unremembered Empire - what a surprise

Pharos

Angels of Caliban

Anything I might have missed? I'm intending to get all of them to call (at least) one complete story arc my own. ^^

Thanks in advance!

cheers,

Kelborn

*edit*

some mistakes were corrected

'Imperium (not Imperius) Secundus' and the book was called 'Unremembered Empire' by Dan Abnett (which is horrible trying to create a bad Shakesperean play with addition of comics stuff) which has started it all, but in general the real beginning for it was Bowden 'Betrayer' and after Nuceria time.

Also there is a short story called 'Stratagem' - that's goes right before the 'UE'.

Then goes 'Deathfire' - first part of the book directly covers aftermath of 'UE' and goes from it (being a horribly structured  plagiat novel which stole several key scenes from the movies of 'Odyssey', 'Avatar' and 'Mission Impossible')

Only then goes 'Pharos' which followed by part of the 'Angels of Caliban'

Dude, you've become predictable. :P

Sorry for my mistake. Unremembered Empire is called Imperius Secundus in its German version.

hm...do I have to read Deathfire in order to continue with Pharos?

And if Betrayer is linked with it, how about Know no fear?

@R_F_D: Thank you for the link!

@R_F_D: Thank you for the link!

1) Telling the truth doesn't mean what you suggested. If the novels are crap - why praise them?

2) German version - right, forget about that.

3) In general yes - if you want to know the fate of 2 characters from UE. But I will never suggest that crap of novel to anyone to read.

4) Betrayer covers the war after the Calth (Calth time - IS did not existed yet) - while Roboute already planned the strike and began covering resources for UE in Betrayer.

5) R_F_D - thanks for the link. I quite forgot about splendid Haley story The Laurel of Defiance which covers the beginning of Corvo crusade. (He is also a secondary character in Pharos)

1) never mind. I just knew that you'd comment on them. That was no criticism. smile.png

2) me too

3) ah well, for just 2 chars it doesn't seem worth it

4) then I'll put Betrayer as well on my list

Thanks. smile.png

I'm almost waiting for Dark Chaplain to appear and advertise you how 'awesome, splendid and godlike' Deathfire is. And you MUST read it because of that. And Kyme is the best author in the world and the sky is green... Something like that msn-wink.gif

The above could be an attempt at sarcasm however it does come across as somewhat mean-spirited.

We all have opinions, even if we disagree with opinions, we don't take the piss out of those opinions.

Totally agree - it was a blank sarcasm, no pun intended

Don't forget 'The Heart of the Pharos', which comes before 'Pharos' and sets up 'Angels of Caliban' too... msn-wink.gif

Hey Laurie:

Are you able to wink-wink, poke-poke, nudge-nudge us at all about...

(For those who have not read any of the Imperium Secundus arc):

...what the heck and where the heck the entire BA Legion is doing/during the events of Pharos through Angels of Caliban?

We see Sanguinius and Azkaellon for a few moments in those books and the Herald of Sanguinius short, as well as a few <cough> chump <cough> Sanguinary Guard getting blown to bits by Curze.

Otherwise.....some 50,000+ (at least) Blood Angels are conspicuously absent and completely unmentioned at all.

If not, no worries.

The IXth legion may have spent

those two books fastening nipples to their breastplates, and so were indisposed

Well, it would make sense where all the nipple armor came from, but all the <cough> chumps! <cough> Sanguinary Guard were blown up by a single piece of C4 ala Curze, so even that possibility is out the door.

Don't forget 'The Heart of the Pharos', which comes before 'Pharos' and sets up 'Angels of Caliban' too... msn-wink.gif

Huh...you really got the chance to flesh out the entire origin of the Scythes, aye? :D

May I ask, did you choose them by yourselves or was it more like: we need someone to write about the Scythes and their origin. Laurie, how 'bout you?

Maybe I'll sit down and read the entirety of the Scythes. Is there an omnibus planned as well? I believe there was something, a couple of months ago.

Laurie, is Heart of Pharos coming to print soon?  Only read good things about it but audio's aren't my cup of tea.

Also, I'd be interested to know more about the conversion process from audio to prose if you're happy to post about it?

It should definitely reach a numbered HH anthology at some point ("everything, in every format, eventually") but I have no idea how long that will take. I would say, the story aside, that BL's audio dramas are reaching an amazing level of atmosphere and sound design - I felt humbled and extremely lucky to have some excellent actors cast in 'The Heart of the Pharos', and the music is fantastic too. (Also, 'Scythes of the Emperor: Daedalus' has a soundtrack by Adam Harvey, he of 'Ultramarines' and 'The Lord Inquisitor' fame - I experienced total fangasm when I heard it for the first time!)

I very much intend to talk more about the process, since it is still very much part of my day job as well as writing for BL. I'll post about it on here, if people would be interested.

Not the entire origin. That won't be revealed until the very end...

There is an omnibus planned for worldwide release in August:

https://www.amazon.com/Scythes-Emperor-Space-Marine-Battles/dp/1784965634

It's not EVERY story, but it's all of the currently available ones that link directly to the novel 'Slaughter at Giant's Coffin'. I hope you enjoy!

I was actually planning a Scythes of the Emperor novel back in 2012, and then ADB mentioned Sotha in 'Prince of Crows'. When Dan was planning 'The Unremembered Empire' he asked me for more info on Mount Pharos and any characters from the early years of the Chapter that he could reference. Richard Williams and I had discussed the name of Ancient Oberdeii as the first Chapter Master, and so it all just fell into place. I was lucky enough to be able to guide the HH guys around my Chapter's home world, and it added masses of backstory to what I was planning. Result!

It works both ways. I took some great cues from the Heresy, like Oberdeii inheriting the iron skull mask of Barabas Dantioch when he is appointed as Warden of the Pharos by Roboute Guilliman. And Mansirius Thorcyra is the last ever Warden, and he's wearing it on the front cover of the omnibus.

Interesting fact (depending on your point of view): Tebecai was named from a suggestion by m'colleague Graeme Lyon. I couldn't think of a placeholder name, so he said "Just put TBC for now!" It's like when Graham named Forrix - in the pitch for the novel he was just "Warsmith XXXX". True story. Ask him.

Cheers Laurie, I'm definitely interesting hearing more about it.

Should have phrased my point better, wasn't questioning the quality of BL audios, it's more I can't find time to listen to them.  Looking forward to reading Heart at some point!

I think the continual negativity is what is wearing on people here.

I personally don't understand why you'd spend so much time.... and I mean a LOT of time on the Bolter and Chainsword with non-stop negative posting on books you call crap... and apparently keep reading.

I don't care why you keep doing this, but I do know it's wearing on the forum.

Last chance to keep this on topic and less about each other in this topic.

very interested!

i've really enjoyed gav thorpe's blogs about audio dramas

I've lost track of the number of times I have logged on and seen every post in this sub have the last post from this person, on one hand it seems excessive but then I think its great to have an active poster?

In any case - on Imperium Secundus its also worth noting that Fear to Tread also sort of preludes into UE and I believe an upcoming book Ruinstorm will finish the IS arc.

Hmmmmm... surly you mean The Dark Between The Stars teehee.gif I count myself lucky having that little doosie in my itunes before it got pulled and amended! That audio was such a nice surprise though, best moment for me... "range to target 999999999999999..." holy *cuss* that gave me the willies!

Laurie - without any pun intended - you are right 'The Heart of the Pharos' should be before Angels of Caliban. But... except for the last 5 minutes it has absolutely nothing important or IS related. Okay we have Pharos and a scout and....

'Know No Fear', 'Fear to Tread', 'Mark of Calth', 'Betrayer' and 'Vulkan Lives' are all prelude to the Imperium Secundus arc a-proper, also several audio dramas and short stories.

Really? Well - in that case let's call Horus Heresy a prelude to W40K.
