I assume the masks only came after the death of sanguinius. The cover of Echoes of Imperium has what is probably a member of the Sanguinary Guard wearing some sort of artificer helmet with an eagle-winged faceplate, a bit like the Ultramarines Invictarii or the helms of Fulgrim or Guilliman. I think there was a line in one of the Deathwatch RPG books about the masks being originally modelled on the death mask of Sanguinius, along with the stuff about them miraculously adopting the features of their bearer after death. In fact there is official art with normal helmets. We just don't know enough. Fenbain Posted May 3, 2017 Share Posted May 3, 2017 I thought it was stated in some BL literature (I think Fear to Tread..) that the death masks were in use during the 30k era and that they were of deceased members of the Sanguinary Guard. The only death mask that represents Sanguinius is Dante's, at least as far as I'm aware. My background is my army is just following the death of their Primarch (sadface)... they are cleansing Terra following the atrocity. You can do whatever you so if you don't like gold and want to do death masks go for it. One of my favorite Heresy artists did a full squad of terminators with death masks. Probably just going to assemble them without the wings (they lookd stupid in my opinion), give them deathmasks and paint them red.
