Amazon UK Essentials

Recommended Posts

Making an Amazon order and wondering if there were any little bits of kit people were impressed with for modelling/ painting etc!

I'm particularly low on the tools side of things... My Knife and Cutters are old.

All suggestions welcome, even more so if they have Prime.

I'm already grabbing some Masking Tape and Micro Sol/ Set yes.gif

Interesting topic - especially as I've literally just bought some stuff from Amazon for the hobby! biggrin.png

First off was a Derwent Pencil Wrap, but I use it for my brushes. helps keep them all organised and in one place (but does work against you when you lose the entire roll, which is why I've just had to buy another one... whistlingW.gif ) There's a couple of bigger slots in there which would be good for clippers, plus the regular pencil / brush slot fits the newer scalpel / saw that citadel have just released.

The second was a dedicated brush cleaner and preserver, because you never realise how much paint is still in your brushes until you use it. I literally spent about 30 minutes the other day just going through and cleaning all of my brushes, and the difference is insane just on regular GW brushes, and I would guess mandatory if you're buying any decent brushes.

Both are Prime eligible in the UK, and significantly cheaper than other physical stores.

Having just picked up a lot of the newer GW tools, I will say the following:

  • Don't buy both the Saw and the Scalpel - the only difference between the two products are the blades, so you'd be better getting the additional blades from a dedicated hobby shop (or Amazon)
  • If you're using the scalpel for a prolonged period of time (if like me you use it for removing mould lines and trimming off ) then the thin nature of it has caused my hand to cramp and it's not exceedingly comfortable. i still have an older, chunkier, GW scalpel (the grey one where the grip is in a triangle), and if i weren't for the plastic grip becoming soft and starting to rub away I'd still use it.
  • The pin vice isn't too bad, it's relatively good but could do with being a bit shorter. Having only just started using it it's already annoyingly squeaking when I'm using it so will have to lube it up.
  • The narrow GW clippers are just good, for what they do they're great - especially getting fiddly bits of the sprues where there isn't much space. I'm sure there are cheaper comparable ones out there, but I just like the look of these.

Needle file cleaner - very useful bit of kit - works on needle files and sandpaper type things - made of crepe - like the soles of the shoes. You can get big or little ones - the big ones are for cleaning belt sanders. You won't throw away sanding tools after buying one they're that good.

I swear by mine - really useful bit if kit

Also try a "Flex I File" by Albion Alloys with various grits - very good for filing and polishing resin and plastic.

Either I'm being a spoon or the product you mention isn't called a 'needle file cleaner' (although, I did find this). Do you have a link I can use to check it out?
