Emperor's Children paint scheme

Hey everyone! I'm doing an Istvaan V diorama and I need some advice on how to paint Emperor's Children. Are there any good tutorials out there? What do you EC fans suggest? Has anyone tried a metallic scheme? Has anyone done a pearled white for pauldrons?

Thank you 30k Brothers!

I think this will all depend on what EC scheme you prefer, the newer purple from the HH Betrayal book or magenta or pink from Visions of Heresy.

Personally I love metallic purple on my EC, it isnt a particularly common scheme and it looks wonderful too! However, as this is for a diorama, maybe you will want a muted scheme so it doesn't overpower your Iron Hands as wel.

I'm on my phone so I cant link pictures, but if you want to see metallic purple have a scroll through my plog in my signature. Otherwise, Kizzdougs has a cool tutorial for his purple and his magenta EC schemes in his plpg.

I've painted a couple of different Emperor's Children schemes. Here they are:

Scheme one:

The second scheme:

Also, here is FW's painting guide:

I don't know if either of these schemes is what you're after, but if you have a look around you'll be able to find plenty of alternatives. A simple google search is all it takes. There are a number of different tutorials on Youtube and on various blogs.

Good luck with the project :)

Thanks for the input guys! I'm partial to a more purple and less magenta version but I am a big fan of both of your work. I'm still incredibly undecided on if I should do a metallic base or not, I'll have to do some test models. I've been googling around a bunch but I thought I would put this question out to BaC just in case I missed something

If you have an airbrush Eidolon Purple over a metallic undercoat could work, otherwise I think Tamiya have a metallic purple spray can. Unfortunately my local shop doesn't sell the metallic purple so I haven't been able to try it out. I have had a lot of success with Tamiya's light metallic blue though, so I'm confident that the purple would be a good option if you can get you hands on it :)

I like the Imperial purple approach, too, and used something in-between the two (beautiful!) examples Kizzdougs posted above on my Ferrus conversion. My two pence is that, in the context of a diorama, you want to keep the purple slightly more muted than you might otherwise, or they'll steal all the attention.

Wow Apologist, I never noticed the swirling detail work on the casualty's pauldron before. That is a very cool detail, I'll have to try something like that on my EC. The EC aesthetic is so departed from what I'm used to, I'm going to have to start thinking outside of the box!

This is my metallic scheme, basecoat leadbelcher air, highlight chain mail air, then Eidolon clear over the top. If you are going for clear coat metallic look you need a 'silver' base underneath.

Badger minitaire make some tints which can be airbrushed over and have a magenta and purple which are different to FW. The magenta is more pink in tone, the purple is more towards blue than FW eidolon clear but similar to use.

I'm firmly in the old school magenta camp, mainly because i'm old and grumpy and still cling to the IA article. I have used white on my veterans, both in terms of helmet and shoulder pads. I've not added a pearlescent layer to these, but I have to my tartaros termies - unfortunately the photos don't show the effect. You really need to go over the top on shading and contrast (i use an icy blue white) of the highlights with the white if you stick a pearlescent layer over the top, as it can wipe everything out. Tamiya and Mr Hobby have a range of pearlescents that can be airbrushed over. Alternatively, just get a spray can of pearlescent stuff and have an easy life.

PJ's spot on with the metallic method, it's just a matter of sourcing the clear paint you like!

A great tutorial on you tube from 'cold painting table' is pretty useful, if you want to get a real vibrant colour, which would work well against IH black!

colorwise i'm in team imperial purple. here's my test mini for my EC i just did. this is my first ever try doing color. still will needs white panels and more highlights and all the metal details, but i thought i post it, cause it is somewhere in between the brighter purples and the darker violets.

1) on top of grey primer it is 2x thin basecoat vallejo hexed lichen. one can do with one, but i went pretty thin in the first go.

2) vallejo purple ink + water (2:3) for a deeper color. maybe just my imagination, but i thought it loos better.
3) vallejo black wash (pure), pushed into recesses.
4) bring back the hole surface of the mini except for the recesses with basically layering each panel with hexed lichen.
5) 2x hexed lichen + warlord purple (2:1) layering of the presumably brighter areas.
