Castus: the first (only?) recorded traitor Ultramarine

So I've been reading some of the rather old short stories and came across a short story called Deamonblood that was published all the way back in 2006 that involved a Sister of Battle and an Ultramarine being captured by Nurgle cultists.

They are tortured heavily and the Ultramarine is forcefully transfused with blood from a demon of Nurgle and succumbs to the corruption, becoming a Plague Champion. The Sister is rescued but devotes her life to finding and killing the fallen Ultramarine.

In the end she manages to fight him and break through the conditioning, convincing him to turn his back on Chaos. He then meets with his Chaos Space Marines comrades and proceeds to take them to oblivion by detonating a melta grenade when they draw close to him.

I found the story interesting. This was also the only instance in all of the BL literature in which a traitor Ultramarine is referenced.

It may be the only in the literature but in the lore it´s stated, only the Grey Knight have never lost  a brother to the Chaos.

And technically every Ultramarine during the Horus Heresy was a traitor with the Imperium Secundus. :D

There is one other I know about in an old short story collection called into the maelstrom. In it one of the Khorne devotees of the red corsairs is a former ultramarine. A very old story now and long out of print. I was only able to get it because it was being chucked by a library.

In the 4th (4.5 maybe?) edition Chaos Codex, an Ultramarines squad goes traitor while cleansing a planet of cultists, the sergeant declaring himself the overlord of the planet and beginning a bloody reign of terror.

Not Ultramarines. Sons of Guilliman. Different chapter.

The fellow you're referring to is Constantius the Liberator.

Only one chapter has never had a traitor.

As much as we love our Ultramarines, we are not that chapter.  In fact, I'm sure there have been many more (and more willing) than just Castus.

When Honsou visited Huron to collect warriors for his invasion of Ultramar, he saw traitors from all 17 legions but the Ultramarines at Honsou's fortress. Personally I expected there to be more references for fallen Ultramarines. I wonder what makes the Ultramarines so immune to chaos. Perhaps it is the whole Ultramarian philosophy of order and discipline in all things?

I forget exactly but I remember reading somewhere that Ultramarines are one of the Chapters which have absolute conviction and certainty in their gene make up. Perhaps it was Tempest? Might have been the HH novels somewhere?

Regardless - all Chapters can have lone renegades. It's just common sense. Isolated individuals, those captured or stranded or those exposed to the warp. All reasons to justify it.
