StruManChu
TO WIELD THE BLADE “One man can murder a world given sufficient time and the fortitude to wield the blade again and again until death’s work is done” – The Primarch Mortarion to the Death Guard Legion. "One man can paint a whole bunch of 30k stuff given sufficient time and the fortitude to actually pick up his brush every now and again and work on the backlog, so he doesn't feel guilty every time he buys new toys" - StruManChu's paraphrase of the above Hello, and welcome to this thread! Today is the fifth anniversary of me joining the B&C. Coincidentally, this is also my 500th post on the forums. So I thought I'd start a project log, which I've been meaning to do for absolutely ages. However, I have poor discipline and, as implied above, a hefty backlog of stuff to get through, and I figured while we're all waiting for Forgeworld to work out what's happening with 30k and 8th, it'd be a good time to catch up. Moving swiftly forwards... This thread/plog/thing will eventually (hopefully) show shining examples from several legions as well as the Mechanicum and Knightly houses. I'm wanting to have a crack at each of the legions of Guilliman's Dauntless Few, with ideas for Mad Max-themed Blood Angels (I'm convinced that Mad Max is set on Baal), a crusading force under Sigismund, and a company of censured Space Wolves. However! Given that this is my 500th post I thought I'd concentrate initially on the sons of the 500 worlds, the XIII Legion, because let's be honest, that's probably where many of us started our 40k experience - with a tiny, poorly painted Ultramarine we got free from a painting lesson at our local GW. Anyway. Here goes! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “We cannot return to Macragge?” “No. The storm in the empyrean is so severe we may never see any of the 500 worlds again”. Silence met his response, but that did not surprise the Forge Lord. His time among the Mechanicum on Mars and Stygies VIII had made him perhaps too matter-of-fact for his brother legionnaires’ comfort. He was not unaware of the gravity of this news, however. While not overly familiar with the Captain to whom he was speaking, none of the minute changes to the man’s facial expressions were lost to his ocular implant. The furrow of his brow as the truth became clear, the narrowing of his eyes as he considered the options available, the way his jaw tightened as he decided. “Make it happen, Rheton. I don’t know how you’re going to do it, but we need to get back to Ultramar”. The Forge Lord inclined his head in acknowledgment. The Captain moved on. Forge Lord Tertius-Meritam Akmar Rheton went to make preparations and alterations to the warp core. The Captain’s orders were direct, and exactly the kind of challenge he had thought would be beyond his reach upon returning to the legion’s fold. Captain Leander Mac Dioniach, born of Macragge, appointed Warden-Acquitane of the world of Arrigata by Guilliman himself, and Captain of the 173rd Chapter of the Ultramarines Legion, paused and leant his head against a bulkhead. This news was not what he wanted to hear. It was not what any of his men would want to hear either. The diversion to collect the Forge Lord Rheton from the other side of the Segmentum Pacificus had added a significant amount of time to their journey, and both he and the men under his command were anxious to return to their posts. However, the return to Macragge was becoming impossible. Of the five vessels under his command, none had been left unscathed by their last attempt to cross into the warp. It had almost killed the Blade of Justice’s navigator, and the Gellar Field on the Illustrious Protector had collapsed within seconds of crossing the threshold. He had signalled to abort translation, which was a perilous manoeuvre for a single ship to perform, but for the five vessels in their battle group, it was beyond dangerous. It was only by providence and the skill of their crews that each ship was still intact. They had known the warpstorm cutting them off from their home was unnatural. Word of the attack on Ultramar had come to the Captain from one of Malcador’s grey agents during the handover at Stygies VIII, and Mac Dioniach had brought his men to heel with an efficiency beyond even that which the XIII were famous for, but it hadn’t been enough. Five ships and an entire chapter of Legionnaires marooned on the wrong side of Lorgar’s ruinstorm, and it fell to him to make a way through. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forge Lord Akmar Rhetan Contemptor Cortus conversion (probably one of the best things I've ever done) Group shot of the army so far These guys will form part of a larger Zone Mortalis Shield-Bros list with Alexis Polux and some of the Seventh, which are in dire need of a repaint. I'll be adding some Tartaros termies to act as a bodyguard for Rheton, and at some point will probably use an old Captain Sicarius as a basis for Mac Dioniach. But for now - PAINTING! And I need to ask a question of you, my beloved Frater. Behold! Plastic Mk IV marines! These guys are obviously still WIP, and I need to blend between the blues a bit more. They also look super bright under this light. Like, 2nd Edition bright. But that's not what I want to talk about. As you can see in the pic above, I've got red shoulders on the tactical squad at the moment. However! I'm not sure I like how it looks, so I've done this as well. Does the red stripe down the middle work? I think I like it as a means of differing them as a Chapter, but I don't know if I like it enough. What do you peeps think? Anyway. Brother Pheidias
Oh, that looks fabulous! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/333805-to-wield-the-blade-strumanchus-plog-of-heresy-stuff/#findComment-4749000 Share on other sites
Brother Handro
Great work! I love everything except the red shoulder. I think you can get away with the stripe, but not the other pad as well. Tricks the brain into, in this case not recognising Ultramarines. Other than that, keep it up! StruManChu
That's pretty much what I thought, in much fewer words. Originally I wanted to have a way of showing them all as being censured, but didn't want a pile of red helmets, so I thought shoulders might be better. Turns out I was wrong! Thanks both for your kind words! Soldier of Dorn
I do really like the idea of that red stripe. And that Cortus is brilliant. But yeah, the red shoulders are a bit much.
