Grey Knights and the new Detachments

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming one thing here.  You start with 3 default Command Points, and you're not allowed to have a negative amount of these.

I've long discussed 'Unbound' armies and maximising the number of NDKs we can take in our lists.  Assuming nothing really changes and NDK remain (perhaps along with Dreadnoughts!) the best units in our Codex (or Paladin, or Purifiers, or any unit that stands out above the others), we still have options to maximise unit spam.

At a cost of Command Points.

There are Vanguard (Elites), Spearhead (Heavy) and Outrider (Fast) detachments, that give 1 Command point and require a HQ unit.  With a 3-6 selection of the role picked.

There are also Auxiliary Support Detachments.  Where you can take a single unit in a role, but you lose 1 Command Point.

If we want to maximise the number of NDK, we could take a Spearhead Detachment, and 4 Auxiliary Detachments.

This would give us;

1HQ

10 NDK

For a total of zero Command Points.

Swap in the Vanguard for Paladin over NDK, or any other combination.

Like Strikes? You can do the same with the Battalion, but it costs you a second HQ unit.

I thought GW wanted to get rid of spam, and promote 'fluffy' varied armies...  Unless Command Points are super important, I don't see this happening.

And even if they *are*, I can simply take two Spearhead Detachments for;

2 x HQ

12 NDK

5 Command Points

Yeah...

OK, go for 6 NDK and 6 Dreadnoughts. ;)

I really hope that the internal balance is such that every unit is as good as every other unit.

But I think that will be off.  The better units will soon start to shine, and by the looks of it, we can just load up on them, whatever they are, with much more ease and freedom than 7th!

They have also granulated wargear/options for the purposes of balancing them without too much hassle! So don't be shocked if something stomps EVERYTHING they just adjust it/its points :)
