Guard tactics v 1ksons?

Recommended Posts

I've been playing for a couple of years now and I've never really been able to handle my mate's 1ksons army. Now we usually play around 2.5 - 5k in points and I've done what all generals have done and thrown men at it, and when that didn't work more men in larger games, when that didn't work send in the tanks then. I'd have conscripts with commissar/priest and combined platoons with flamers thinking that guard numbers can handle themselves in close combat. My tanks whilst meagre in numbers (only 6 LR) aren't used properly, or their load out is wrong, and my baneblade is wasting shots on the wrong targets. My Psykers are limited to a primaris and 9 man squad of wyrdvanes. Now the elite units may get swapped nearly every time we play, I've found ratlings to be fairly handy, I love my vendetta and my mate is scared of my Devildogs. I hate Daemon Princes!!! Especially the ones with wings!!!

Has anybody got any tactics or strategies or just some good ideas that they think would be successful against a ThousandSons army with 8th coming?

I've not fought Sons, though I am building a force of them up so know a fair bit. As Shamansky says more info would help - such as it is before 8th lands and changes everything!

In their current form they're a bit pricey, but quite durable and can be potent for it. However much of their strength counts for naught against Guard, for what does a 5+ save care about AP3 over AP5? They die as easily as any other Marine to small arms so take out those Rubrics with lasguns. For tougher foes like Termies/Scarab Occult land some Demolisher shells on them - usually solves the problem along with more lasguns (that 2+ save only needs a 1...) ;)

I wouldn't even bother competing in the psychic phase, you're wasting points trying to win a fight that's stacked against you. If you want a counter consider a Culexus Assassin to ruin your opponent's day :P

Punishers, Exectutioners and Demolishers as well as weight of fire and tarpitting will grind them down

Aegis will help your gun line stand up to their AP5, watch out for their flamers though

Like WF said dont bother with the pschic phase, take a Culexus or SoS.

They actually play very similarly to GK's with low model count, power mobility and high cost.

So out manoeuvre them and go for objectives.

Cheers Duz and warriorfish. Sorry if I'm being a bit vague shamansky, I believe I'm basically using my tanks the wrong way, staying in the back field and taking pot shots and he'll deep strike some terminators in beside them or I'm countering the wrong units with the wrong weapon a vanquisher to take out his HQ or troops when probably a template weapon would be better, and use the vanquisher for his forgefiends, obliterators and other armour. My errant Knight went straight for his instead of maybe going for some squishy targets first and trusting that ion shield to stop a few cannon shots.

I haven't tried the mechanised approach of troops in chimeras to outmanoeuvre, try and make him split his force and counter me instead of trying to straight up bar fight with him.

Knights are terrible against other knights generally as it's probably mutual destruction - not worth the risk unless you're desperate, better to have it bully other units and then go pick on the Knight from behind/finish off. Tanks are good, but need infantry support - escorting troopers will keep the tanks safer from deep strike and the like as you protect their flanks.

Target priority is essential so working on that will help a lot, but don't forget that you can "cheat" and take units that don't care so much about the target ;) For me that's a couple of Demolishers - Marines, Termies; all will really be dust under their sights and they hit vehicles hard too with the S10, AP2 and Ordnance rule :D
