New approach to Drop Pod lists

Recommended Posts

What is funny, it that the larger Stormwolf can carry up to 8 Wulfen, but the Rhino can carry 10, as the Rhino does not share the same transport language as the Stormwolf. Certainly, this oversight is due to the fact that we're sharing the same Rhino data slate entry with all other Adeptus Astartes Chapters, and they didn't think to add the appropriate language into the entry. It'll probably be added when we get our own codex.

Best,

Wulfen can't ride in rhinos unfortunately. On the wolves army list page there is a small addendum that says Wulfen can only travel in marked transports and only land raiders are marked. And they count as two models each.

Valerian, you sound pretty informed about what's going on with 8th. What is your opinion on how Drop Pods are going to fit into the list? Do you think they'll count towards the total overall number that needs to be kept in reserves?

I seriously doubt that was the intent, but it needs an Errata or a FAQ answer from GW to clear that up.  Right now, RAW, drop pods are discreet units from their passengers, so a rules lawyer type would definitely be right in counting the pods as part of your <50% limit on units kept in tactical reserves.

On the Twitch stream for the 8th edition games last Friday GW confirmed a Drop Pod does count towards the limit so a unit using a Drop Pod counts as 2 deep striking units.

That is so stupid and really frustrating but oh well. Nothing we can do about it now about adapt and overcome. I've never really played against WAAC players so take this with a grain of salt but I never really understood the folks who claimed "Null deployment" drop pod lists were so broken. Maybe it was for vanilla marines with their grav and skyhammer formations but for SWs in particular it was pretty challenging to run a Pod list competitively. Especially the Blackmanes formation. Drop Pods needed a change.. but tripling the cost as well as the changes made to deep strike was too much.

The way dedicated transports work now, you can take one for each none DT unit you take. So your Skyclaws can take one, your TWC can take one, even your Landspeeders and predators can take a dedicated transport.

Just thinking out loud really, but the humble Razorback could be a (relatively) cheap way of getting heavy hitting firepower on a (again, relatively) durable platform on the table. A Razorback with twin heavy bolter comes in at 85 and a twin lascannon Razorback is the most expensive variant at 115.

Provided you have the points, you could give every unit that doesn't need a transport a cheap Razorback with heavy weapons to flavour. Extra fire power and extra units on the board for your 50% deployment total.

TWC in a transport? Hmm.. that could be really interesting.

TWC can't get in a transport - they don't have the Infantry keyword.

Also, as I described earlier in this thread, Skyclaws, TWC, Landspeeders, and Predators do not "take a dedicated transport."  Nothing "takes a dedicated transport in 8e.  Instead, you can choose to add a dedicated transport to your Detachment per other non-DT choice in the Detachment.  That means there is a one-for-one allowance; it does not mean that those other units are "taking a dedicated transport."

That makes more sense. TWC in a transport would be a little crazy.

So, if a character is attached to a unit that is in reserves in a Drop Pod.. is that another "unit" we have to count or does he share the same unit as the one he is attached to? Example.. Ragnar is with a unit of PAWG in a Drop Pod held in tactical reserves. Will that be considered 3 units or 2?

That would be 3 units unfortunately, since Ragnar doesn't actually join the squad, and is a unit by himself.

They really decided to make Drop Pod based lists very hard to do.

The idea I've had so far was to try and take 4 Pods. One with a GH pack, Two with Bloodclaw Packs, and one with two Long Fang packs. That is already 9 units in Pods. If I take Ragnar and a Rune Priest like I'd want to I'm up to 11 units... I think I could do it if I take a few lone wolves and some other smaller units but I'm starting to fell like it's going to be a stretch.
