Mantis Warriors?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help me identify which greens were used for this mantis warrior? I've done some search for how people have painted them and there's one that says Castellan base, layer of Loren Forest, highlight of Straken, but I'm unsure if that's the right shade.

Hmmm I'd say the first two layers of castellan green and loren forest are spot on. For shade i'd say using black would be better than green, I've done this with the uniforms of my Stirland army which have the same kind of green and it looks better. For the highlight though, I think it looks more like Elysian green perhabs, which is kind of a yellowy green colour. Hope this helps a bit :)

GrandMagnus' suggestion looks very reasonable to be, although I would do the blackline shading with a 50/50 mixture of Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade to get a dark brown, and just apply this to the recesses (not all over).

Not only is the dark brown still quite striking in contrast against the green, but the red hues in it (as brown is green and red mixed together), will help to keep the green "warm".

Subtle, but effective! ;)

The original RT scheme had red eyes, and he's right that most subsequent depictions also have red eyes. It happens that the model in his original post has blue eyes, but that seems to be the exception rather than the norm.

I suppose it's a bit like Salamanders - to me the "correct" eye lens colour is and has always been yellow, but it's pretty common to see red/orange lenses (even on official GW studio stuff).

In the end though, whatever looks good to you is probably best - even factors like what exact shade of green or yellow you use for your Mantis Warriors's main scheme will affect how the different eye lens colours are perceived afterall.
