Curious what everyone thinks of LotD now.

With the new deepstrike mechanic and their ignore cover, I think they may be one of the best marine units to drop in with a MM. Not sold on the base model cost though as I think their invuln save is being overvalued.

Going to try a pair of 5 man squads each armed with a plasma gun and MM. Still debating the Sargent loadout, but leaning toward plasma pistol and power sword/axe.

Thoughts?

The cost a tiny little bit more than a tac squad in a drop pod, but get a 3++ and you can skip the pod. The downside being the very limited weapon options and lack of <Chapter> Synergy. I modeled my sarge with a combi grav and now they can take one. They also aren't fearless anymore for some reason. Maybe once the marine dex drops they'll get expanded on.

I'm not sure how you get LotD being a little more expensive than a Tactical squad in a pod.

25 points per Legionnaire is 125 points for 5.

5 Tacticals in a pod costs 170 points!

And don't forget to pay for their wargear.

Boltguns, bolt pistols, frag and krak grenades are all 0 points and since that's what Damned and Tactical both come equipped my numbers are accurate. I also factored in the 2 point stormbolter on the drop pod.

Supposedly mortal wounds are not super common. Space Marines only get them with Librarians and Scouts and certain characters like Guilliman. So the 3++ should still be pretty good.

I don't know what math I was doing the first time around but two identically equipped 10 strong LotD and Tacs in a pod are the exact same cost(302 points).

LotD would get a 3++ but Tacs would benefit from any <Chapter> buffs. And for a few extra points get a grav cannon.

Including them in a regular Marine detachment also looks problematic, as they'll prevent your other marines from using their <CHAPTER> bonus. It looks like they'll either need to be in a standalone detachment, or taken in a mixed detachment with other <IMPERIUM> units instead.

But as you can use more than one detatchment anyway that shouldn't be a big issue. From my experience the LotD is a big distraction bait. It's like they draw more attention to them as seems warranted. But hey I would stare at Death if it comes in black power armor decorated with bones and flames, too :)
